Listers For those of you with hotmail addresses that have still managed to stay on the list over the last few days, and for those subbed again for the umpteenth time!!! I contacted Rootsweb regarding the bouncing Hotmail addresses and below is the response I have received. As you will see, it tells us nothing more than we already knew. I just find it rather interesting that it is just a selected few address that are having this problem, not just on one list but on several. I can say for certain that it appears to be a hotmail problem and not a Rootsweb one. I was endeavouring to help a hotmail subscriber off list (and through this address) to sort out the problem, one of her emails to me bounced telling me she had exceeded her storage allocation. The email I was responding to was telling me that she had NOTHING in her folders!! All I can offer you in terms of suggestions is to; 1: CLEAN OUT ALL FOLDERS. If you have information in a folder that you want to keep, forward it across to your ISP address and store it in your folders over there. 2: MAKE SURE YOUR JUNK MAIL SETTING IS ON MEDIUM by keeping it set on medium it lets you go and check if there are emails from listers. It can usually be judged just by checking the subject line. 3: SWITCH OVER FROM THE L MODE TO THE D MODE for those who are subscribe to the L mode for the list, it would serve better in this situation to subscribe to the D mode and select a filter to direct them across to a folder. 4: NEW ADDRESS ditch hotmail altogether and take out a new mail address with Yahoo. Bright Blessings Sandie A response to your Help Desk message, "Hotmail Bounces," of Wednesday, 4 September 2002, at 2:43 a.m. follows: ------------------------- Hi Sandra, As far as RootsWeb can see the problem lies totally within the hands of Hotmail, as they are the ISP that is rejecting the mail that we are trying to deliver. RootsWeb is happy to talk to Hotmail about the issue if we can find someone to actually discuss the matter, so if your subscriber has contact details we would love to have them of have Hotmail contact us. If Hotmail thinks that we are at fault we are definitely willing to listen. To your happy unsubscriber you simply need to tell them getting angry at you and RootsWeb is less than effective. Regards Andrew

Hi, George COLEMAN (hopefully my gt.gt.grandfather) born Headbourne Worthy near Winchester, Hampshire about 1807/08 and had minor convictions for robbery, bastardy, poaching. He was convicted in 1830 for being part of a group of 'machine breakers' and sentenced to seven years' transportation to VDL. Arrived Hobart August 1831 on board the 'Proteus' with 98 other convicted Swing Rioters. He was placed on the Loan Gang and assigned to Mr Jellicoe, James Reid, Dr. Brock and Mr. Hepburn. Hepburn brought a charge of 'duty of duty and other misconduct' against George who received fifty lashes. George received a free pardon on 3 February 1836 and is 'believed' to have left Launceston on the cutter 'Aquila' in November 1838 bound for Port Phillip. One of the earliest settlers in Buninyong (near Ballarat) was a George Coleman who was an employee of the Learmonth Brothers. George married Harriet WILSON in 1841 and together they raised four daughters, Jane (Thomas REDFERN), Elizabeth Bertha (James DONALD) Emma (George WILSON) and Mary who decided to be a single parent! I'd love to have contact with a fellow Lister who is researching this line. Carol Battishill from Warner's Bay, NSW
Samuel Sargent born Devonport near Plymouth married with 1 child Ship Circassian 1833 Tried Devon 1830 for larceny The indent reads - "Stated this offence - stealing silver spoons - once for rope 9 months" (Samuel was a Ropist - lesson to be learnt here - take care when deciphering writing on convict records - amazing what a difference a vowel can make to one's reputation) Transported for 14 years Ship Circassian Married Mary Lewis 1845 Children 6, born 1846 - 1855 died Richmond aged 94 Rest In Peace Great-great-grandfather Christine Watson PS to Bill Sargent - got the vowels right this time Bill
Hello everyone My three convicts were all transported from Somerset, England, at the same time!: Richard RODGERS, born c. 1795; and Joseph RODGERS, born c. 1818; John RODGERS, born c. 1817. They were my great x 4 Grandfather and two of his sons, of whom John was my great x 3 Grandfather. They lived in Farrington Gurney, Somerset, at the time of their crime, which was sheep stealing, and they all had the alias surname of HODGES. They were convicted at Wells in the Spring Quarter Sessions of 1845, and sailed on the Equestrain (2) in 1845. If you are interested to read any further details, please take a look at: http://website.lineone.net/~sgrist/ChiversGenealogy/Rogers/index.htm Would love to hear from anyone who has any of the descendants in their tree. Hello Sharon I believe the Mary Ann Jacobs who had 19 children is the ancestress of my husband. Her parents were Charles Jacobs who married Mary Ann Thyer in Longford. Mary Ann married Herbert Lewis, and then a garcia, and died in Devonport. I have their marriage certificate and quite a long list of descendants, which I have compiled from several sources of the diferent branches of the family. Charles Jacobs was a Jew, a convict tried for sealing a watch-case. I can send you more information if you want it. His convict indent says he lived in London and had a brother named James. Cheers Rose Murtagh Slán go fóill (Bye for now) St. Helens Tasmania Australia [email protected]
Would the subscribers who are using HOTMAIL accounts please make sure that you CLEAR your mail everyday. Addresses are bouncing and unsubscribing because of exceeding storage allocation. On the left hand side of the screen is a storage meter please keep an eye on it. You can do a few things to avoid being unsubbed: 1: Keep folders empty. If there is anything you want to keep save it to you hard drive via notepad or word pad. 2: Change your subscription mode to D (digest), put the address on your safe list or address book and set you junk mail to the required level. You must also consider people replying to your postings so think about the setting. I have mine set at a level where I have to delete them myself. I check the junk folder to see if anyone has replied to something then I empty it. These are not HARD to do. If you want to find out what HARD is then I can think of a couple of voluntary jobs around about the place :) Haven't seen and big HURRAY's yet ... must be one coming up very soon .... Hi everyone, I am descended from someone called Isaac Jacobs. There is a convict by this name, but I have not yet established for certain if this is the correct one. If anyone can shed any light on this, I would be most grateful. Isaac Jacobs the convict was transported on Atlas in 1833. There are records of an Isaac Jacobs having children by 3 or 4 different women: Elizabeth Nelson had Bejamin Jacob in 1845. (m. 1845 in Launceston) Mary Ann Golden had Henry Jacobs in Launceston 1842. (May be the same person as Mary Ann Green). Mary Ann Green had Mary Ann, Amelia, Julia and Rosia between 1843 and 1852 in Launceston. Mary Dwyer had John in Fingal in 1854. I am descended from Mary Ann Jacobs who married Richard (John) Newman in 1861 in Fingal. They had 14 children. However, to make matters even more complicated, there is another Mary Ann Jacobs who had 19 children. I have seen websites etc, where descendants of this Mary Ann Jacobs also claim Isaac Jacobs and Mary Ann Green as her parents. I would dearly love to hear from anyone who has an Isaac Jacobs in their tree to see if we can sort this mess out. Kind regards, Sharon, Melton, Victoria.
