    1. [TAS-CONVICTS] Any gene club In Launceston?
    2. Sharon Hawkins
    3. Hi all, I've recently moved to Tasmania from the Gold Coast and I'm a family history addict! I was in a club on the Gold Coast and want to join another nearby here in Launceston! Can anyone help out with details? If there is one I'd love to hear about it. Is it a friendly group? Are they open in January? I have a pile of genealogical material myself - can I share resources with other members. I could type a list. Do they do newspaper indexes or anything I could get involved with? Does it matter that to my knowledge I don't have any Tassie links in my tree. I am really missing chatting to people with the same interest so any pointers most welcome! Love to make some genealogical crazy Tassie friends. Other just don't understand the bug ;-) Cheers, Sharon Hawkins in Newstead in Tassie

    2. Mike and Robin Hurburgh
    3. Valerie, Victoria Valley is in the Central Highlands, just west of Tarraleah. Currently the main highway goes via Tarraleah, but there is a 'short-cut' via an old route through Victoria Valley. There is a Seven Mile Creek just north of the point where this short-cut joins the Lyell Highway again. Could be the two references are to the same probation station in the area. I presume the station was for logging purposes, as the road past this point to the west coast wasn't constructed until the 1930s. There are two other Seven Mile Creeks in Tasmania, one on the Waratah Highway, the other in the South West National Park, neither of which were likely sites for convict Probation Stations. 3. Hi Valerie, Victoria Valley and Seven Mile Creek (also known as Marlborough) were not stations visited by Charles La Trobe in 1847. Seven Mile Creek: This is close to the centre of Tasmania and is on the road from Hamilton to the west coast of Tasmania. It was supposedly open from 1841-1844? then 1849-1850 Victoria Valley: This is between the road to the west coast and the main road through the middle of Tasmania (somewhere near Bothwell, I think). It was open between 1842-1844. This is from the book by Ian Brand called 'The Convict Probation System: Van Diemen's Land 1839-1854' ISBN 0 908528 20 5 For anyone else who is interested in finding out about the probation and hiring stations that are mentioned in La Trobes report in 1847 there are many references you could look up if you are in Sydney Mitchell Library including the Tasmanian Papers 57-127. If in Tasmania at the archives office they are found at MM62 films 1-41 and are copies of the Comptroller General's correspondence, the originals of which are those in Mitchell Library Sydney. 3. After two successes due to list members, dare I hope for another. Have James Patrick O'Malley born 1861 in Bathurst to James O'Malley and Mary Dunn. James father was Andrew (James Clark) O'Malley and his mother Mary Gerety. (on marriage cert.) Cannot find out how James O'Malley arrived c1833. He married in 1857 aged 42 in Bathurst (he was born c1811-5) The spelling was Malley etc. etc. Mary Dunn was 20 when she married She was an Irish immigrant. Many thanks for any info. 3. Hi Irene, These could be a possibles for Mary Ann Jones nee Fisher: Victoria: JONES, Mary Ann, Age 46, at Richmond, Victoria, 1890 Registration Number 13568. Father: Acton Thos, Mother: Elizth FISHER. Her age would fit, and one of her children was named Albert John Acton JONES. The fact that the parents names on the index has the mother as FISHER could be an error, or Acton Thos and Elizth surnames were both FISHER. Or: JONES, Mary Ann aged 79, 15 July 1915, at Southwark, South Australia, Relative: John JONES (Deceased Husband) Registration Hin bk 385 pg 385. There are too many John JONES deaths in South Australia for me to find a match to Mary Ann. I am unable to check the South Australian marriages for their children at this stage. If you do not have access to the SA Marr records, email me and I will see if I can find them when I am next able to visit the Gene Society. Hope this helps.
