Hello everyone. I have an ancestor by the name of Robert SPICK, who was tried and sentenced at the Nottingham Quarter Sessions in 1840, to 7 years hard labour. He arrived in VDL aboard the "H.M.S. Tortoise" 19 February 1842. He received his freedom 20 October 1847 . . . . and disappeared. He was aged approximately 40. I have been unable to locate any trace of him after this time. I understand that there were regular musters for ex-convicts - does anyone know whether this applied to convicts who had done their time as well? If so, is anyone in a position to look at any muster rolls for me? Or any ideas what else I can try . . . Any help most appreciated. Thanks, Beth

The "Lady Nelson" accompanied the "Albion" when the first settlement was established on the River Derwent. A young women called Martha Hayes accompanied the new Governor, Lt. John Bowen, as his mistress. Martha was the daughter of Mary Hayes a convict, who had arrived in Sydney on the "Gatton" (with Martha) in 1803. Martha and her mother and father settled at New Town on the River Derwent on land granted to them by Gov. King in 1805. (Henry had come on the "Calcutta" to Port Phillip in 1803) There were a number of other convicts on these ships when they arrived at the new settlement. It will be Two hundred years in September since these first two ships arrived in the River Derwent and the replica of the original Lady Nelson will be commemorating this historical event by sailing up to New Town Bay and other parts of the river during September 2003. If you would like more information please email me [email protected] Irene Schaffer Hobart

Hello. I am trying to find information about a couple of convicts who appear to have been transported to Tasmania. William WAGSTAFF - arrived apparently on the "ANDROMEDA". Thomas WAGSTAFF - arrived I think on the vessel "AURORA 1" I do not know anything more at all, such as their offences, convicting county, length of transportation, or the date of transportation. So any information, no matter how small or insignificant to confirm these details or supply additional information, would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance, Beth
Lyn, I would suggest that the age given on the marriage certificate is the most reliable - it was given to the Registrar by the person himself (who better to know how old he was!). Ages given for death certificates can only be regarded as hearsay or second-hand evidence at best. Mike Hurburgh [email protected]
