    1. Trial Records - can listers help?
    2. Steve and Coralie Sallans
    3. Dear List I contacted the Manchester Archives and Local Studies to find out how I might access the trial records for Ann Levy who was transported to Tasmania on the "Angelina" with her two children in 1844 and received the following reply:- "We hold the session papers for 27 Dec 1843 for Manchester Quarter Sessions (ref: M116/2/4/11). The papers are not indexed so it is difficult to search through them. We are unable to photocopy them for preservations reasons. I would suggest you contact a record agent who may be able to search the records and transcribe them for you (see http://www.manchester.gov.uk/libraries/arls/agents.htm)." As yet I have not contacted any of the record agents and wondered if any listers have had any experience with these services? Thanks Coralie Sallans

    2. Jim Halsey
    3. Hello Coralie, Before you approach a member of AGRA and spend perhaps large amounts of money why don't you sign up with one or two lists covering Mancheste, Lancashire and or Cheshire. You may well find that there are helpful listers who will search for you for nothing other than for your sincere thanks or, as in several cases, the listers concerned have offered recprocal help in Australia or Canada . My research has been at the National Archives and local archives in Kent and Surrey where I live, but I am afraid that Manchester is just too far away for me to be able to help you there. One further thought - I have often wondered why all our colonial friends and relatives don't organise a "help-ourselves" service through the good offices of the thousands of young Australian visitors to this country, at least a few of whom might very well find a visit to a records centre or archives office a surpisingly interesting and enjoyable experience. If you want to pay them for their efforts then perhaps some Aussie dollars into their account at home would be a welcome thankyou. Best wishes, Jim Halsey

    2. Peter Thomas
    3. I see that several other Listers have quickly created a very impressive bibliography. My favourite is "The Fatal Shore", by Robert Hughes (1987 - still in print). I think this is an ideal point to begin to understand the convict system. Of course, this book extends far beyond VDL. You might be lucky, and find that your convict gets a mention, but even if not, this will help you to get a handle on the context of transportation. I can't recall the precise title but Charles BATESON's "The Convict Ships" is very helpful on matters of detail, once you know which ship your convict came on. Another Lister has mentioned TARDIF's "Notorious Strumpets ..." - what a wonderful title. Although this book principally deals with female who arrived in VDL upto 1829 - and therefopre may seem irrelevant if your convict was a male - the book contains many references to interaction between female convicts and other residents of VDL. 1. Elizabeth Armstrong/Charlotte Jones
    2. Margaret Watson
    3. Dear listers, my convict is Elizabeth Armstrong, transported on the Angelina. She admitted on her convict record that her name was actually Charlotte Jones and that Elizabeth Armstrong was an alias. The Angelina arrived in Hobart 25 August, 1844. In 1847 she married at Kirklands, Tasmania, to Edouard/Edward Meurillion, a policeman. They and their first two children came to the Bendigo goldrush after the completion of Charlotte's sentence in June 1852. Four more children were born to them in Victoria. I would love to make contact with others researching this family. Best wishes, Margaret Watson.
