Dear Listers Back on the 16 Mar 1847 at Stafford Quarter Sessions 3 young men got 10 years transportation for maliciously stabbing and wounding to disfigurer Police Constable William HUGHES. They were all potters by trade . One of these was Elijah WRIGHT. He was a grandson of a Master Potter , Obadiah SHERRATT . As fate came into play Elijah was dispatched to NSW on the Hashemy . The other 2 were George COOK, 28, and Thomas MOORE ,23, they had to wait a while and were eventually dispatched on the Nile (2) 1 from London to Hobart 16 Jun 1850. Never needed to do much research on Tassie convicts before so its been a learning curve ........... I think Thomas MOORE might have applied to marry a Jane GULLINS but don't think that happened and found some ref on him about paying for cost of passage ? George COOK/E might have been married in the UK ? Had Elijah been sent on the Nile instead of on the Hashmey I wouldn't be sitting here typing this Wondered if someone more conversant with TAS convict records could see if there were any clues as what happened to these 2 blokes , please ??? Fingers crossed Bye MargM NSW Central Coast

Hi Brett, I have found two women who died in 1931, Selina Langley, per Aurora 1851, and Sarah Ann French, per Stately 1849. As many women were younger than was recorded on their convict records, it is possible that there are other women who died in the early 1930s. Subject: [AUS-Tas] Kevin Izod O'Doherty Irish convict Dear Lists, while writing my book on the North Queensland gold fields I came across Kevin Izod O'Doherty who was a convict sent to Tasmania fron Ireland.. I have followed him on line but wondered if anyone on the lists has any extra information. It seems he was a doctor on the gold fields after he was free, but this is not mentioned in anything I have read, except a paper I found while I was doing research for my book. I have names of a few books but it will take time to have them sent to Cairns. Dear Lists, reading Bev's message made me think of the book I am reading about the gold rush on the Palmer River in Northern Queensland. This has nothing to do with immigration, but it might be of interest to those who are doing their family history and wonder why they can't find the death of someone they are searching for. The book is called "River of Gold" by Hector Holthouse and tells of many of the diggers who came from every state in Australia (and overseas) in the 1870's to make their fortune. Many of these men died from natural causes but many died from encounters with the Aborigines, starvation or those who wandered off and were never seen again. There wasn't any officials in the early part of the gold rush to record these deaths or even know the names of those who went missing. Regards Irene Irene Schaffer O.A.M. Some time ago a lister wrote asking why/how would their ancestor was not named with family in the immigration records. Recently whilst in an Op Shop I found a book outlining this family in Australia. The woman in question was a widow born in England. She had become involved with the Brethren and they had taken over guardian-ship of her 3 children. After she re-married she was reluctant to give up her children so she and her new husband " smuggled " the children on board their ship. Maybe for some reason or other this may have happened to other children who appear to be missing from the shipping lists. It then occurred to me that there could be cases where a childless sister had taken over rearing some of the child/children belonging to a sister/brother. This same scenario can be played out here as well. Just some food for thought. Regards Bev Hoping some of you are getting rain here in Qld. _______________________________________________ Reply posters should snip out all irrelevant parts of the original posts, especially footers. _______________________________________________ Email preferences: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__bit.ly_rootswebpref&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=zHQbvOKSetNQFd1gTLg_AGM3TiYV9_0srtmu8yp05NA&m=ofs5VmOW8pyIh8-tA4Brl1OHREAtZrh3L1lQdaQc0XY&s=eZ84aHK0Gc_IWQ5SY_j4icvEJvCOqUS78IK7ay6uWPs&e= Unsubscribe and Archives https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/search/aus-qld Privacy Statement: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ancstry.me_2JWBOdY&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=zHQbvOKSetNQFd1gTLg_AGM3TiYV9_0srtmu8yp05NA&m=ofs5VmOW8pyIh8-tA4Brl1OHREAtZrh3L1lQdaQc0XY&s=rz-TZybMtfF99QU4JI2VmM-mcuOhnW3kBXsEEowcqko&e= Terms and Conditions: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__ancstry.me_2HDBym9&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=zHQbvOKSetNQFd1gTLg_AGM3TiYV9_0srtmu8yp05NA&m=ofs5VmOW8pyIh8-tA4Brl1OHREAtZrh3L1lQdaQc0XY&s=XdRyZ_hk_LoQggsY1FZ6Np4v1SddXjCXr7jMzhEUML8&e= Rootsweb Blog: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__rootsweb.blog&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=zHQbvOKSetNQFd1gTLg_AGM3TiYV9_0srtmu8yp05NA&m=ofs5VmOW8pyIh8-tA4Brl1OHREAtZrh3L1lQdaQc0XY&s=rvuq0K1P4ZocTX1lzpI6mynXOQRGKEhyiUMDDNKEGqE&e= RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.avast.com_antivirus&d=DwICAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=zHQbvOKSetNQFd1gTLg_AGM3TiYV9_0srtmu8yp05NA&m=ofs5VmOW8pyIh8-tA4Brl1OHREAtZrh3L1lQdaQc0XY&s=LqqzUaQz2bMpuy6lOWNrvb7eGTb-pXukQv-2K2RFqSY&e=
Dear Lists, I have been asked for help in finding where the petition may be found with the names of those living on NI 1788-1814 who objected to being removed to VDL. I have read where there were petitions but have never seen the originals or know the references, possibly at the Mitchel Library. Any suggestions. Kind regards Irene Irene Schaffer O.A.M. Hi Brett The short answer would be the 1789 French Revolution limited French exploration, then the rise of Napoleon came from the British to deter expansion. Regards Alan
Hi, From what I understand, the British colonised Tasmania/Van Diemen’s Land in reaction to French expeditions and exploration beginning around 1784/85 and continuing sporadically for the next 15 years or so. Why did it take the British so long to react to the French interest and activity ? And, why didn’t the French at least establish a settlement to support their Pacific interest ? At the time, I would assume that Mauritius would have been the only French colony to serve their ships “on the way to" the Pacific. Thanks, Brett Weinberg
Listers Was the Launceston Goal, one and the same as the Launceston Penitentiary? William Jones, in his obituary in 1859, was recorded as Superintendent of the Launceston Penitentiary for 35 years. In the 1848 Census, he was recorded as the person in charge, householder was Her Majesty’s Government, establishment was in George St that housed 120+. George Fuller, in his ‘Recollections of L’ton 1836-1847’, mentioned William Jones residing in George St and that he was clerk at St Johns. This man was married in Georgetown in 1823, no info about convict status nor ship. In 1827 he was father of 3 young boys who were recorded in the 1827 muster of children in PD. William their father, was recorded as ‘had been prisoner now free’, as per Garry Wilson’s data now on Biographical Database of Australia. Has anyone an interest in this man, who may have arrived on the Lord Hungerford? Kaye Sutton
Thank you Lynne for looking that up for Anna and shedding light on his alias. In my haste this morning I took that he was not fully victualled and thought he had arrived later than the other Calcutta Convicts. In my senior senior moment I forgot that the victualled list started from their time at Port Phillip not England. I will send Anna the page I referred to in the Muster book so she can see it. Again many thanks Irene Subject: [AUS-Tas] Jonathan SPENCER Hi Anna, This is from 'Convicts Unbound' "Jonathan Spencer, alias John SMITH [c 1781-1804] Butcher Aged 21 of Braunston near Oakham, Rutland Tried at Rutland Summer Assizes (Oakham G.D) 30 July 1802 for stealing 45 sheep and 45 lambs from a Mr Robinson and others at Braunston.
