The term was used to distinguish those who had a licence to run stock on Crown lands, from those who had other titles to the land such as freehold. I am researching a Port Phillip squatter and his cousin who had licences for areas in the south east, and that land was under Commissioner for Crown Lands, Charles Bonney. The licence fees for these runs, which were very large, were ususally paid on behalf of the licenceee by agents in Adeliade. In the case in which I have an interest Younghusband and Co paid the fees, usually about £50 a year of that many square miles. Kevin Brewer
