Not sure where this discussion started, but there was a Boys Industrial School in Adelaide suburb of Glandore in 40's to 70's period. I think the Glandore or Edwardstown Industrial School or Glandore Boys Home as the locals knew it (I lived in Edwardstown when it existed) was later called "Wandana" and there is a Wandana Street, Glandore about where it was located. I understand this was later sold off for residential housing by the Government. The Boys were given normal formal schooling with qualified teachers in proper sclassrooms. My Father was an early teacher at that place. Magill Training centre was called over time Magill Industrial School, the Boy's Reformatory Magill, (known locally as BRM) , Magill Training Centre. and Mc Nally Training centre after one of the long serving Superintendents Mr. McNally. Magill also has a very high concrete walled section that was called "Maximum security" into which the very hardened young offenders were sent If you google " boys reformatory magill mcnally " Lots of hits come up for the various Govt institutions which tells you some about them All the then CW & PR establishments went through a large change during the term of the Dunstan Government from being hard repressive places to more humane places, except that it was about this time when the Maximum security section was built to get the "Hard cases" away from all the other offenders. Also at that time the original massive two storey bluestone reformatory building was demolished and single story units as they are today were built . I think that was when it became the McNally training centre. Some other Children's Welfare & Public Relief (C.W. & P.R.) establishments in SA were: (not necessarily all of them though) Opposite Magill Reformatory was "Magill Home" which was an old age home for people with little or no means of support or accommodation. This was sold off later and subdivided into housing as it is today. Some of the original buildings are still there but have been converted into homes. Kumanka, a two story 1800's stone building in middle of North Adelaide. Where young offenders lived, but went to school or work daily as any other young person did. Not sure what happened to this place. Vaughan House (Named after a long serving matron with surname of Vaughan) was also an 1800's building (previously a private home) in Enfield suburb which was a Girls reformatory/establishment. Also sold off for development and I think may have aged care homes on it nowadays, (Not totally sure of this.) Bedford Park home...I think Flinders Uni and/or Flinders Hospital is at this location nowadays (dont rememebr much about this one). Lochiel Park a 1800's 2 storey building at end of Hill st. Campbelltown, Adelaide. The building still stands there along with some other later built buildings, (not sure if still used for same purpose or not though). Later another junior reformatory called Brookway Park place was built alongside Lochiel Park, run independently from Lochiel park and which was later still, demolished and is now a residential subdivision which has 5 star eco houses on it. Lochiel Park & Brookway Park were for the younger offenders. Struan Farm School (11 miles South of Naracoorte) a 1800's former home (it was a mansion of a place with farmland) of a Robertson family which the Govt purchased and was used for young boys who were either "the better of the Lot" or who had encountered the Police in Adelaide but had been felt to have been "not too bad" and had been led astray and were sent to learn farming, or had come from homes where the family unit had broken down. Some of them later worked on farms in the district and are still working in the district or other farming areas today. This building and farm was closed in mid 1970's and became and still is the South East Headquarters of the S.A. Agriculture Department Its an impressive building as you drive down toward Penola from Naracoorte. I understand the building is under control of the National Trust and has had signifcant restoration work done on it in past few years. One can go in and look around. It has a very high tower on it. Except for Magill Old Folks Home as it was known, all the people in these establishments were under the age of 18yrs, and were sent to these places by the juvenile court system, To see a picture of Struan House have a look at State Library of Victoria site at: > http://digital.slv.vic.gov.au/view/action/nmets.do?DOCCHOICE=2979998.xml&dvs=1371952970924~255&locale=en_AU&search_terms=&adjacency=&divType=&usePid1=true&usePid2=true < To see a picture of Magill Reformatory original 2-3 storey building > http://www.findandconnect.gov.au/sa/biogs/SE00057b.htm < To see a picture of Vaughan House > http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/160165059?q=Vaughan+House+%28Enfield%2C+S.+Aust.%29&c=picture&versionId=174612811 < > http://www.google.com.au/search?q=vaughan+house+enfield+picture&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=bFzGUfqqEIeKkwXC3YCwAg&ved=0CCoQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=843 < To see a picture of quite a few of their places > http://www.findandconnect.gov.au/sa/biogs/SE00064b.htm#related < If looking for details of any person who was in those establishments, it might be best to contact "state records" at Gepps Cross and see if they have anything.
