Hi Paula BUROW is a name that appears in the ancestry of many of the German families in South-East Qld. Many came to Queensland, and descendants marry into my BEUTEL and KAPERNICK ancestors from the Queensland side of my family. It is possible, although not conclusive, that I am a BUROW descendant myself. BUROW is a French Huegenot name- the Huegenots were the name given to French Protestants (most of them belonging to the reformed church) that fled France and went to U.S., Germany, England and other countries because of religious persecution from the late 1600s to the early 1800s Some of them went across the Rhine and established settlements on the other side of the German -French border. As Prussia spread its territory, the Prussia king encouraged them to settle in the poorer territories of Prussia to help establish those territories. Thus, many Huegenots, including the Burows, came to the area of Germany north-east of Berlin that is now known as the Uckermark, and is close to the Polish border. There is a lot of information on Ancestry on the Queensland BUROWS if you are a member there. Do you know who the parents of your Ferdinand BUROW is? Warm Regards Chris -----Original Message----- From: Paula Sent: Saturday, July 06, 2013 12:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Barow family arrival Pt Adelaide 1878 Hi listers I am wondering if sks knows if there is anyway to check some information please. Does anyone know of diaries or similar for the 1878 Eduard voyage from Hamburg. I am helping a friend by looking into the arrival of Ferdinand Ludwig Burow & family into South Australia in 1878. >From Hamburg passenger list on ancestry.com, I have Ferdinand (38) with his wife Amelie (39) & children Carl (17), Theodor (14), Gustav (10), August (9) Bertha (3) & Albert (7mnths) aboard the Eduard bound for Port Adelaide. >From trove in The South Australian Advertiser, 19 June 1878 , there is mention of F Burow, wife & 6 children arriving at Port Adelaide aboard Eduard. >From State Records of SA in the online index all of the above names appear as arriving in Sth Aust as assisted passengers. On trove in the South Australian Register, 11 July 1878 an article which reads "During the voyage of the Eduard from Hamburg one of the passengers, a youth named George Burow was unfortunately Iost overboard. He was in the act of drawing a bucket of water when he overbalanced and fell over the ship's side. The vessel was under a press of sail and going at a rate of about ten knots when the accident occurred, so that there was no prospect of rescuing him." >From BISA - BUROW Ferdinand b: c1840 Hamburg, Germany arr: 1878 EDUARD occ: Agricultural Labourer m: Amalie b: c1839 Hamburg, Germany ch: Carl (c1861-), Theodor (c1864-1878), Gustav (c1867-), Augt (c1869-), Bertha (c1873-), Albt (c1874-) My queries are as follows: I couldn't find another Burow on the ship Eduard in 1878 & then presume it was one of Ferdinand's children who fell overboard, but no George is mentioned as one of his children leaving Hamburg. Going by BISA it would appear as Theodor might have been the Burow to fall overboard as no death entry can be found in the South Australian death indexes for about that time If George is Theodor, why would there still be 6 children mentioned when they arrived in Pt Adel. Did they use the Hamburg passenger list when mentioning names in the papers & the State Record records? There was another son, Max, born in 1878, but from his headstone, it appears he was born in September 1878 after their arrival in Sth Aust. His birth isn t on the SA birth index, but as a lot of German immigrants didn't seem to register their children's births, I have nothing to check this date with. As far as I can see, there are no clues on Ferdinand's naturalization papers as he states he only has 4 children, Carl, Gustav, Max & Emma (Emma was born in SA 1880), which is true as these are the ones who are still alive in 1913 the date of his naturalization papers. Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanking you for your time.
