Dear Listers, In another letter I will fill you in all about sorting out the mystery of my husband's Brooks relations. But for now here are the following: on the ship Brakenmoor which left London 4th April 1843 for Van Diemens Land were my husband's little family. Thomas Brooks, 21 years, his wife Hannah 25 years both born in Yorkshire. They also travelled with a 7 month old son Emanuel. Now....on that same passenger list was a Moses Brooks, also born in Yorkshire. I am trying to find a connection between them. But that is not the reason why I am writing this letter. Was just now sent a newspaper article about a Moses Brookes in front of the Police Commissioner etc. South Australian Register Saturday 13 January 1849. I am intrigued about the story as Moses is such an unusual name.. There may be something in your records about this man. He might have come by ship to South Australia with our little family..as Thomas and Hannah (nee Ashton) had some children there, the first a girl born 1847. The story went about a Moses Brookes a Teamster, Port Road. The poor man had wheeled the barrow for a shop owner for 20 miles and asked for his 5 schillings. Apparently Moses had used a lot of bad language and the poor dear was fined 20 Schillings and costs. As you can imagine all this is very intriguing and a real mystery. Wonder if Thomas and Moses had the same father...as Thomas's own child was named Emanuel?? Looking forward to your reply and hopefully something else will turn up. I had enquired from the Tasmanian Site about a ship they could have caught after their son Joseph (my husband's ancestor) was born in Hobart in 1844, but there were no shipping records available from the Tasmanian end. Perhaps there is a record of them arriving in SA...the couple had some of their children in Myponga. kind regards, Sieglinde.
