Greetings Ailsa in Brisbane You wrote: Hoping someone has access to search the SA immigration indexes that cover the time period of 1883 - 1889 so that if my Henry is listed I can then request details from the SA Archives or Library in relation to the information held. Looking for: Henry ROSSON who married Lillie BROWN in Birmingham, England in 1883. I have details from the SA Police Gazette that indicate he was there in Richmond, Adelaide in 1886 as well as living in Rundle St Adelaide in Nov 1889 (he had a bit a of a reputation, and have found him in the newspapers etc) but it is his arrival that I am looking for. He may not have been an assisted immigrant, as other family members did live in Adelaide at the time (George and Catherine). If anyone has any access to indexes that they can look up for me or advise of web links I would be appreciative. Nothing is showing for him on the SA Archives or State Library web sites. My reply: the first thing I did was look at the BISA [Biographical Index of South Australia] and found the following - ROSSON George par: Wm Henry? ROSSAN born c1856 ENG arr: 1876 GOLDEN SEA occ: Labourer, Butcher res: Glanville rel: Cong m: 22.1.1879 Nth Adelaide SA Janet Ann nee CARMICHAEL par: Wm born c1860 ch: Eliz (1880-1885), Wm (1881-), Edith Alice (1883-), Gee (1885-), Henry (1887-), Ann (1889-) Then I visited the State Library of SA's website and suggest you visit the following webpage: http://www.guides.slsa.sa.gov.au/content.php?pid=99525&sid=746999 The following do offer "look up" services - but you will need to provide something more specific, date wise. State Library of South Australia - www.slsa.sa.gov.au Email: info@slsa.sa.gov.au South Australia Archives (State Records of South Australia) - www.archives.sa.gov.au Email: srsaPublicAccess@saugov.sa.gov.au So I suggest you visit the following webpage: http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/titles?state=South%20Australia First select the Newspaper which best covers your timeframe, probably South Australian Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1858-1889) then select the year you are interested, and start the hard slog - looking at the Shipping [Intelligence] usually page 2 to 4. The State Library has a large Index file in their Newspaper Reading Room and some kind soul on this list might volunteer to look for your family in these Indexes. Perhaps Andrew Peake might help you. His publication, Sources for South Australian History, (Second Edition, Adelaide, 1998) is a wonderful source of information for researching anything about SA. http://www.ozgenonline.com/~agpeake/ Email: agpeake@gmail.com Sorry I cannot help further. As you can see - I live in Melbourne. Cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm
