    3. An invitation is extended to you to attend a special fundraising dinner for The Clipper Ship ‘City of Adelaide’ To be held at The Pavilion, Adelaide Oval Friday 5th November 2010 6:45pm for 7.30pm With the announcement by the Scottish Minister for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, that South Australia is the preferred bidder to receive the world's oldest clipper ship ‘City of Adelaide’, we invite you to join us at a dinner to celebrate the announcement and to raise additional funds to transport the historic migrant ship to South Australia. Launched on the 7th May 1864, the ‘City of Adelaide’ is a few years older than the world’s only other surviving clipper ship, the ‘Cutty Sark’. Whereas the ‘Cutty Sark’ was a tea freighter, the ‘City of Adelaide’ was purpose built as a passenger migrant ship to serve South Australia. As the only surviving sailing ship built to give regular passenger and cargo service between Europe and Australia, the ‘City of Adelaide’ represents a whole foundation era of Australian economic and social history. It is difficult to imagine a more vital icon of the making of modern Australia, and of the relationship between Britain and the Australian colonies. The fundraising dinner will also celebrate the 146th anniversary of the first arrival of the ‘City of Adelaide’ in Australia and to help raise funds raised to move the internationally important vessel from its slipway it is being evicted from, and where it has lain for nearly two decades, to South Australia. The dinner will be attended by our Patron, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR Governor of South Australia. Guest speaker is Sir James Hardy KBE OBE - yachtsman, wine maker, raconteur, businessman and community leader. Master of Ceremonies is "Mr. South Australia" Keith Conlon OAM. The cost of the dinner is $100 per person and includes pre-dinner drinks, beer and some table wines. Bar facilities are available for purchasing drinks during the meal. Dress code is Jacket and Tie, or Victorian/Colonial costume. We sincerely hope that you join us to celebrate the Scottish Minister’s announcement and to help support the effort to save the ‘City of Adelaide’. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to email: events@cityofadelaide.org.au. Please also consider bringing friends and colleagues and making up a table of eight. If you can offer items for a silent auction and raffles on the night, please contact us at the same email address. If you are not able to join us, please consider making a tax deductible donation to help save the ship. More information on the dinner and the ship itself can be found at www.cityofadelaide.org.au.
