Hi List Looking for information on a John Henry Holmes. Maybe born in or 'near' SA (perhaps on board ship) about 1844. His parents seem to be Alexander HOLMES and Lily (nee HOLMES). John Henry HOLMES was a Miner. He married Mary Ann WILLIAMS on 10/4/1866 at the Christ Church Sofala NSW. He and Mary had ten children. John Henry's father (Andrew) was a "Millwright/Engineer". Both John Henry and his wife Mary Ann HOLMES died in Penrith (St Mary's). John Henry in 1920 and Mary Ann in 1919. I have searched Victorian BDMs and NSW without any luck. There is only one John Holmes marrying Mary Williams in 1866 and that is in Sofala (Christ Church), NSW Marriage Index: 3106/1866. This record has been obtained as well as the church marriage document and both state that John was a /miner/, born in Melbourne Victoria to Andrew and Lily Holmes...the church document also provides Lily's maiden name as Holmes. John Henry Holmes died in St Marys NSW in 1920 (NSW Death Index 12437/1920) and his death certificate lists his wife as Mary Williams (married in Sofala), and also lists most of his children. Mary Holmes (nee Williams) died in St Marys NSW in 1919 (NSW Death Index 12429/1920) and her death certificate listed her husband as John Holmes (married in Sofala), and also listed most of her children. There is one clue still being tracked in that on John Henry's death certificate, it states..."born on a ship off Victoria". Despite JH Holmes himself stating he was born in Melbourne Victoria this does not necessarily mean the ship stopped in Victoria. Perhaps it went to South Australia. So it is with this information that I am seeking help from the list about John Henry HOLMES and/or his parents Andrew and Lily HOLMES. If possible, could you please contact me off-line. Many thanks.
