Dear Jill Do you know what the H stands for in James H. Bennetts name? I've presumed James Henry. Bennetts is a name which occurs primarily in Cornwall. I've come across it there a number of times. The baptisms under the name BENNETTS listed on the OPC are later in 1855 and 1868, but not all parish records are loaded on yet. Middle names were not always given or noted on baptism records. Quite a number of my Cornish forbears born from c.1780-1870 for whom I have documentary evidence of middle names, don't have these middle names on their baptism, or civil registration records. Searching FreeBMD under BENNETTS, and Deaths from Sep 1837 - 1860 gives over 95% return for Cornwall. A couple in Stoke Dameral and Tavistock, which are Devon, on the border of Cornwall. My thought is that you are looking at a Cornish name in Bennetts. I noted deaths for a Henry's and Elizabeth's in Redruth, moreso than other Counties. Next, I would be contacting the some OPC's (Redruth, Camborne perhaps) to see if they can shed more light. Beyond that the Cornwall Family History Society has a very helpful website, and CD's of pre-civil registration can be purchased for all parishes. The IGI has a marriage, an extracted parish record for: Henry BENNETTS and Elizabeth RODDA, on 1 Nov 1830, Camborne, Cornwall. This is the only marriage that comes up under Henry and Elizabeth Bennet or Bennetts. This would mean that the James BENNETT bapt 6 Jun 1831, Camborne (extracted parish record) to parents Henry and Elizabeth is the son of the couple above. Next thought is that young James will be in the 1841 Census and likely the 1851 census, quite possibly still living with his parents. I searched on FreeCEN, and there are a number of James Bennetts coming up. I couldn't find an exact match for 1841, but then enumerators miss-spelt names, so a wider search may pay results. I did find a name match with 1851 census: Piece: HO107/1916 Place: Camborne -Cornwall Enumeration District: 1j Civil Parish: Camborne Ecclesiastical Parish: All Saints Folio: 286 Page: 8 Schedule: 183 Address: Condurrow Father: Bennetts, James, Head, age 50, Miner, born Camborne; Mother: Bennetts, Elizth, wife, 47, Miners wife, born Camborne; Son: Bennetts, James, 21, miner, born Camborne Other children all born in Camborne were: Elizabeth 24 , mining girl; Ann, 20, mining girl; Jane, 16, mining girl; Fanny 14, home assistant; Henry, 9, school; Richard, 5, school. Another way to go, to try and determine which family he belongs to, is to try and reconstruct the possible families, to look at the baptism / birth names and dates, and to try to see if there are any similarities to his children's names, or naming patterns being repeated. My thought is that James is likely named after his paternal grandfather. Can't think of anything else useful, and hopefully this helps you move on a little farther. Kind regards, Rowena
