Hi all I am wondering if anyone has some Books on Port Pirie back in the late 1890s through to about 1920, about business in the town. In particular I am looking for Symonds Emporium. My grandfather Stanley Symonds was a cabinet maker as far as I know according to family lore and worked and/or owned this in conjunction with his brother or brothers. Any information would be most welcome Regards.... Liz fireopal61@gmail.com
Liz, perhaps try keywords "Symonds Bros" rather than Symonds Emporium. NLA Australian Newspapers http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ The partnership carried on by the undersigned, under the style of "SYMONDS BROS" at Alexander Street Port Pirie has this day been dissolved by mutual consent. The business will be carried on under the style of "SYMONDS BROS" by Richard Gilbert Symonds, Stanley Symonds and William Symonds who will pay and discharge all the debts and liabilities of the late partnership, and to whom all the outstanding accounts must be paid. Dated September 17, 1904 GEO. SYMONDS R.G. SYMONDS W. SYMONDS S. SYMONDS Witness - P. Hi Liz, Confirming what Robbie has posted, the 1903 SA Postal Directory has for Pt Pirie, George, Richard G., William & Stanley SYMONDS (Symonds Bros.). There is an entry above those just mentioned which is a bit hard to decipher but may mean Jno. H. Laury, Manager, Symonds Bros. Store and undertakers. There is a separate entry for S SYMONDS, cabinet maker of Solomontown. (Solomontown more or less same place as Pt Pirie). In the 1924 Sands Directory:- R.G. SYMONDS is mentioned as one of the Resident Justices of Pt Pirie. He is a JP and Storekeeper. He is further mentioned SYMONDS R.G., J.P (Symonds Bros.) Pt Pirie. Stan SYMONDS is a cabinet maker, Pt Pirie Mrs Symonds, bdghskpr (boarding house keeper?) Pt Pirie Geo Symonds, farmer at Wudinna SA W Symonds, salesman, "Hessle", Hargrave St., Semaphore ( the only W Symonds mentioned). Symond Bros. storekeepers is still mentioned in Pt Pirie in the Business Directory section.
