    1. [AUS-SAGEN] Land purchase update

    3. Hi Listers Several years ago from records published in the SA Government Gazettes, I compiled a database of those who purchased land under the credit selection scheme 1869-1890. http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/landselectors.html. I have now added further information. Some selectors failed to fulfil the required conditions or failed to pay amounts due. After a warning notice in the Government Gazette, a number of these selectors had their agreement forfeited or revoked. Other selectors applied to transfer their selection to another farmer giving reasons such as old age, personal hardship, ill health, accident or insolvency. Upon the death of a selector, the administrator of an estate would apply for a transfer. When changes were made to the conditions, many selectors applied for a new agreement. This allowed a longer time to pay. The substituted residence clause permitted a selector to apply to place his son, son-in-law, male relative or man servant on his land. While the searchable database of more than 17,500 purchases by credit selection covers the period 1869-90, the additional information is only to 1875 so far. It includes dates when agreements were revoked or forfeited and when new agreements were approved. The reason for transfers is noted and names of the new selectors have been added to the database.
