    3. Hi I think it is a good idea to back your files up not just to an external drive but you can use services like Google Drive and Dropbox. They are free for basic accounts. This means if your DVDs or usb sticks or external drives stop working then there is a backup. I still think we should keep paper copies. I know storage becomes a problem but paper will always be readable. However, the disadvantage is you need to use archival quality paper and archival storage boxes.It gets expensive, but I feel better having paper copies. Then you got to consider fire - I know someone that lost 20 years of genealogical research in a fire. My paper copies are in a storage shed. The paper and boxes and storage shed sends me broke but my records are safe lol - 1. B acked up to external drive 2. On Dropbox 3. On Google Drive 4. Paper copies in a storage shed.
