    1. [AUS-SAGEN] 1851 Emigration
    2. John Keynes via
    3. Sheelagh's posting reminded me that my g-grandfather and his family arrived in S.A. in that year. 1851 was a "great" year for emigration from the British Isles. The "WILTSHIRE EMIGRATION ASSOCIATION" in that year arranged for 4 emigrant ships to go to South Australia and 2 to Victoria. The ships to S.A. were Omega(15/04/1851), Marion (18/03), Thetis (27/05) and Navarino (17/06). The 2 to Victoria were Statesman (17/06) and John Knox (15/03). The Marion was wrecked when arriving in S.A. waters near Edithburgh on Yorke Peninsula. All emighrants survived the wrecking and most were taken by various means, eventually to Port Adelaide. On the Marion were 229 emigrants from various counties of England, 45 from Scotland and 72 from Ireland.
