HI Colleen, In 2006 we held our family's 150th Anniversary of arrival in SA. There were 6 of us who did the bulk of the work, getting the info together, then organizing the 'get together' - we also had a distinct lack of younger people interested in this activity, never-the-less we forged on and produced paper trees, photos of known family members, etc. We had a power point presentation going during the afternoon and everyone helped fill in information that had not been known to us, correcting some of the things we had wrong, etc. Those that attended thoroughly enjoyed the memorabilia on display, photos, computer displays and were amazed at the number of descendants our Great Grandparents had in this State. One cousin was extremely lucky to have a lot of old china from the early days, books, jewelry etc which was displayed in a secure glass case. Also if anyone has a video recorder this is a wonder source for viewing later on. We produced a CD after the event also. We took photos of family groups, age groups, all those present etc and everyone from young to old wanted copies. That was heart warming, as it showed they were interested. Since then we have found several more cousins who are the next generation below that have shown some interest and I think we will have the family history carried on by them as time goes by. So do not fret about how to put it together, have the laptop available, if you can have paper trees for them to see the family [many are not into computers, etc] take lots of photos of all those present and sit back and pat your self on the back for having this knowledge to pass on the your family. One other thing, we were lucky enough to have 3 non family people attend who are also into family history and they were there to help with story recording, updating info on the computer etc. The stories from the oldies are the things that put interest into the whole thing, so if you can get non family friends to help out like this it is a big bonus. They are so helpful to have on board as they will not be involved in the family, only the recording of facts and stories. Good luck and do let us know how it goes Kind regards Ros On Fri, Jan 14, 2011 at 1:59 AM, Colleen Dunk <colleenmdunk@gmail.com> wrote: > Hi all > A cousin has organised a family reunion - she knows ( as well as everyone > else in the family does ) that I am the main one in the family that is > passionate about our family history & have been researching out family for > over 20 years.. > The get together is at her brothers house & I have offered to take my lap > top along that has my Gedcom program on & her brother has access to a big > screen that he said can be displayed on for everyone to look at. > A few family members are in their late 80's & in ill health & this will > very likely be the last time the extended family ever gets together with > the last remaining oldies - who were the children of our family who > immigrated to Australia in the late 1800's.
