I, too, have an interest in this family and would particularly like any information anyone can provide on Jane BATTINSON who was a sister to my 3xgr-grandmother.. Here is what I know about Jane. Jane BATTINSON was baptised 8 Jun 1823 Burnley Lancashire. Parents John and Elizabeth BATTINSON. In 1839, aged 16, Jane applied to emigrate to South Australia. Her occupation was domestic servant and she was single. She travelled on the BABOO, accompanying her sister Mary who was newly married to Henry WOOD, and they arrived in March 1840. On the 14th June 1840 Jane married Thomas HUGHES in Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide. I have not been able to find anything further about either of them in Australia, but it seems Thomas was a mariner so it's likely they moved around. Jane next appears in England as a witness against her husband as reported in the Leeds Mercury March 25, 1871 in an article titled BIGAMY AT BIRKENHEAD. It seems Thomas had married another, Mary Ann ROWE, almost 17 years earlier and had eight children with her. He was sent for trial but was acquitted (Criminal Records 1791-1892). When and how did Jane BATTINSON HUGHES return to England? Did she have any children? It seems from the original report she and Thomas may have resumed a relationship. When did she die? What became of Thomas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
