    1. [AUS-SAGEN] Further reply re Sister Lewis's Private Hospital
    2. Alan
    3. I overlooked mentioning a further source We should, I suggest, also look at contributing to the local history where appropriate. I have provided the City of Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council with material in relation to my William Henry HALL building in Kensington which was gratefully received - and in turn the "Cultural Heritage Advisor" was most helpful in respect of council records relating to the land. I would suggest Deb contact this person: Ms Denise Schumann Cultural Heritage Advisor Historical Services Norwood Historical Centre 1st floor 110 The Parade Norwood SA 5067 phone 08 8366 4536 Alan Melbourne

    1. Re: [AUS-SAGEN] inquiry about Sister Lewis's private hospital
    2. Alan
    3. Deb was inquiry about /Sister Lewis's/ Private Hospital, It has been variously described as being in Norwood, Beulah Park and Kensington - all around each other - The address I can up with was 52 Kensington terrace. North Kensington One has to remember various suburbs got amalgamated and renamed etc. Deb also indicated that she "googled it" - so did I. There is a bit of a trick in doing that - try putting phrases in quotation marks such as "/Sister Lewis's/ Private". It makes a big difference in eliminating extra results. Another one is the plus or minus key eg +sister +lewis +private +hospital -government for an example to exclude anything with government in the search. Deb - also check out www.nla.gov.au for old newspapers as they tend to suggest no results after about 1946 I did a bit of ambulance work from mid 1960's for that area and do not recall that location - but then again I could be having a "senior's moment" regards Alan Hall Melbourne

    2. Dennis Newton
    3. Hi Genie, If you contact the Border Watch they will send you a copy of the paper you are after, think it was around $7. Seeing as I have quite a number of ancestors from there and living relatives I put dads death notice in The Border Watch last month and ordered a copy of that issue. I contacted them by email. http://www.borderwatch.com.au/ If your family came or lived in the Mount in the old days the Library has a extensive searchable database for newspaper articles and photo's. The library will also send copies of articles from the local newspapers. http://mtgambier.spydus.com/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/MSGTRN/OPAC/BSEARCH http://www.mountgambier.sa.gov.au/library/ Dennis Newton. 1. [AUS-SAGEN] Many thanks for the help re Henry ROSSON
    2. Ailsa Corlett
    3. Many thanks to the help of Angela Keany, for sorting out some extra details on my Henry ROSSON. Have lots to follow up, but appears he may have arrived via Victoria ports first and then joined his brother George (who was living in SA) at the time, as he does not appear on the SA records but there is a H ROSSON in Vic in 1883. Again thanks Angela your information will lead to many more questions I am sure but also to some answers. Thanks from Ailsa in Brisbane.

Greetings Ailsa in Brisbane You wrote: Hoping someone has access to search the SA immigration indexes that cover the time period of 1883 - 1889 so that if my Henry is listed I can then request details from the SA Archives or Library in relation to the information held. Looking for: Henry ROSSON who married Lillie BROWN in Birmingham, England in 1883. I have details from the SA Police Gazette that indicate he was there in Richmond, Adelaide in 1886 as well as living in Rundle St Adelaide in Nov 1889 (he had a bit a of a reputation, and have found him in the newspapers etc) but it is his arrival that I am looking for. He may not have been an assisted immigrant, as other family members did live in Adelaide at the time (George and Catherine). If anyone has any access to indexes that they can look up for me or advise of web links I would be appreciative. Nothing is showing for him on the SA Archives or State Library web sites. My reply: the first thing I did was look at the BISA [Biographical Index of South Australia] and found the following - ROSSON George par: Wm Henry? ROSSAN born c1856 ENG arr: 1876 GOLDEN SEA occ: Labourer, Butcher res: Glanville rel: Cong m: 22.1.1879 Nth Adelaide SA Janet Ann nee CARMICHAEL par: Wm born c1860 ch: Eliz (1880-1885), Wm (1881-), Edith Alice (1883-), Gee (1885-), Henry (1887-), Ann (1889-) Then I visited the State Library of SA's website and suggest you visit the following webpage: http://www.guides.slsa.sa.gov.au/content.php?pid=99525&sid=746999 The following do offer "look up" services - but you will need to provide something more specific, date wise. State Library of South Australia - www.slsa.sa.gov.au Email: info@slsa.sa.gov.au South Australia Archives (State Records of South Australia) - www.archives.sa.gov.au Email: srsaPublicAccess@saugov.sa.gov.au So I suggest you visit the following webpage: http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/titles?state=South%20Australia First select the Newspaper which best covers your timeframe, probably South Australian Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1858-1889) then select the year you are interested, and start the hard slog - looking at the Shipping [Intelligence] usually page 2 to 4. The State Library has a large Index file in their Newspaper Reading Room and some kind soul on this list might volunteer to look for your family in these Indexes. Perhaps Andrew Peake might help you. His publication, Sources for South Australian History, (Second Edition, Adelaide, 1998) is a wonderful source of information for researching anything about SA. http://www.ozgenonline.com/~agpeake/ Email: agpeake@gmail.com Sorry I cannot help further. As you can see - I live in Melbourne. Cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm
