Re Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Ship deserters. Thank you Maureen for the link to to your database. I think this one (CLARK Willson. Deserted 'Starbeam' May 1862. Source: D6) is my gg grandfather. Could you advise what source D6 means, and is it available for me to check? Hi Listers I have added a further 6,600 names to my database "Persons Lost & Found". These have been extracted from National Archives registers of ship deserters at Port Adelaide (1852-1876). The database can be searched at http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/deserters.html Mostly I worked from microfiche of the original as the book is quite fragile. All but one "A" page is missing. A number of "B" pages have been damaged by years of handling and parts of these surnames can no longer be read. Very little information is given in the registers; just name of deserter, name of ship & its master, and a date. Prior to mid-1864 the dates are only month & year. The handwriting is not good and the spelling can be best described as "creative". I have recorded the names of deserters, their ships and the date. Less than 100 have age and or origin - I have included this info. Some of the ship names do not appear in Parson's "Migrant Ships for SA 1836-1866". However I found these, often small interstate or intrastate vessels, recorded in the newspaper shipping arrivals or departures. Not all deserters remained in the colony. It is quite likely that, after a few months ashore, many, particularly those who spoke little or poor English, decided to sign on to another ship. Also, not all deserters were sought by authorities - some captains were probably glad to be rid of idle trouble-makers. As a few of the deserters were gaoled, I checked the Adelaide Gaol registers at State Records. The writing is even worse and doesn't give much more info. Unfortunately gaol records prior to 1857 have not survived. Bye Maureen M Leadbeater Adelaide Co-operative History http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/

There is a Death of and Edward COLES in 1877 father named John. You really need to get the Marriage cetificate, this should show the names of both sets of parents all you need is your credit card and for $17.50 you can download an image of the Marriage Registration to your PC from the BDM onlinesite. Spot on Jean. This works for Win7 32 bit but NOT for Win7 64 bit. The CDs do not have to be upgraded, only the programme digger.exe. Digger414.exe will only work on Win 7 32 bit, not Win 7 64 bit. This problem will not go away. Almost all PCs are now being sold with Win 7 64 bit. For the developers of Digger it would not be a major job to recompile the code to run on 64 bit. Dear Listers, Is it possible to check whether an early family was on Destitute relief. I've found something on a website, below: "Scherger, Christiane Friedericke nee Conradi: Applies for destitute relief in 1851. Her husband is unemployed." Her husband was Johann Rudolph Friedrich Scherger, and they had children known as Amelia/Emilie, Charles/Carl, Minnie/Menna/Caroline, and Augusta Louisa Melina. He was a miner, and I'm wondering if there is any miners database, to find where he may have worked? Son Frederick Herman was supposed to be born at Port Lincoln in 1851, and I don't know the area to know whether this was near any mining. Could anyone help me with this one? By the way, an interesting note on this family, is that Frederick's son was Fredereick Rudolf Scherger, born 1904 Ararat, Vic. was an early RAAF graduate who was was considered one of the top aviators between the wars, serving as a fighter pilot, test pilot, and flying instructor, and one of the first Australians to test parachutes from a flying plane. In charge at Darwin, during the Japanese bombing in WW2, he rose to the rank of Air Chief Marshall of the RAAF during WW2, and other than Monash, was the only Australian to have command over American forces. Knighted for his services, he was also the first Australian to fly at the speed of sound, when he took over the controls of a jet, while on a buying expedition for the RAAF. He came from a poor background, his grandparents and a number of aunts and uncles were illiterate. What a life. Wikipedia has a quite a good profile on him (link below). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Scherger Hope this is of interest to some. Cheers, Rowena
Hi Listers, I have previously sought information re the SEMMENS family in SA and received valuable advice. I have now come across a NICHOLAS SEMMENS (Breage) m. SARAH ROBARTS (Ludgvan) 1828. A daughter SARAH SEMMENS m. WILLIAM GAY at Ludgvan on 16/7/1853. A son WILLIAM GAY b.1858 (?) arrived in Moonta Mines, SA in 1884. He m.ELIZABETH SARAH SIMMONDS (SEMMENS) WILLIAMS on 5/9/1885 in All Saints Church Moonta Mines. To shorten the story ELIZABETH SARAH was raised by JOHN SEMMENS and wife MARY at Moonta Mines, Barossa (?) and Adelaide. I am assuming there is connection between the Cornwall and SA SEMMENS families. Hoping some lister might be able to shed some light on this for me. Neville Lee Kariong NSW
Thank you to everyone who has offered their advice. I really do appreciate your time. Again, Thank you. will keep you up to date as to how I go. Regards Robyn
I had the same problem but luckily I had W7 Professional installed and could download "Windows Virtual PC" and install all my BMD cds on that and run Digger from there in its own window.
