Hi Michael In that era in formal society the eldest daughter's given name was not used, but she was known as Miss Smith. Younger daughters were known as Mary Smith, Jane Smith, etc. Likewise the eldest son was Master Smith with younger sons being known by their given names. Dear All, According to Manning, Jordan Park was a stud farm on the South Road conducted by Mr T. Jordan. I have an account from the Register of an accident there which resulted in the death of a young lad in 1892. Would anyone be able to give me a more accurate location for Jordan Park? Many thanks in anticipation, Michael

This is No 4a & 4b of 6 South Australian non-family photos in the album - more to come I have 2 photos one of Jane and the other of her Daughter both are Cartes de Viste Jane is by Otto von Hartitzsch 113 Rundle St Adelaide and her daughter is by the Paris Photographing Company Serial N0 9468 neither have explicit dating nor any annotation except for the index entry. My brief newspaper research points to this woman being the Jane Daniel who married Peter Petterson in 1885 Jane apprears to be in her thirties. Her daughter appears to be bout 5-8 years old. My guess is that the photos are dated about 1890-95. I have no idea why this photo is in the album. Since Jane is the same age as Joseph Clark jnr's children I can oly assume that the phoro was sent to then in Brisbane with correspondence. Happy to share the image (for non commercial use) with anyone with an established connection to Jane Daniels who may? have married Peter Petterson in 1885 in an attempt to verify the photo against any existing copies or likenesses held by family members. Geoff Carse Queensland Historical Note: (direct enquiries about the following welcomed, many are in the album) Joseph Clark had a photo album with about 80 indexed entries most were family but many were SA local friends or visiting preachers or dignitaries, local or visiting. The album has been passed down to myself a gg grandson of Joseph. I am progressively identifying the individuals that do not seem to be related to the family. Joseph Clark b1804 Enniskillen, NI d1809 Brisbane m Elizabeth Kiteley b1840 Adelaide d1913 Brisbane Joseph was an accountant who rose from Commissariat Clerk to Secretary of the Defence Commission His father was Colour Sergeant Joseph Clark, Barracks Sergeant of the 96th Foot a Manchester Regiment under Capt. Butler that arrived in SA on 17th October, 1841. Sergeant Joseph Clark was recognised by his superiors to be the first serving British soldier to set foot on SA soil as he was responsible for establishing quarters for Capt Butler and his men. Children of Sergeant Joseph Clark and Mary Ann Pearsall who married and had children were William Clark bc1833,d1907 m Susan Cave 1858 Lived at Angaston Auditor and Land Steward for George Fife Angas, two of his sons (Alfred and William) became stockbrokers in Melbourne his only daughter Lillias became Mrs Charles Augustus Altman and lived in south Yarra, Melbourne Joseph Clark jnr see above Mary Ann Clark b1842 d1904-1927 m 1882 to Donald Sinclair may have lived at Port Lincoln (possibly 2 sons and 4 daughters) John Allworth Clark (tailor and businessman)b c1846 d1932 Sydney m1871 Sydney to Elizabeth Ann Jane Mullarky lived in order Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane (Alderman & Lord Mayor), and finally Sydney(Alderman of Petersham NSW) Samuel Halworth Clark (surveyor) c1850 d 1871 Sydney m1871 Adelaide to Mary Annie Brendon Parsons (at least 4 sons+2?) lived probably at Angaston and moved to Sydney abt 1976 after an insolvency in SA, died at age 45 family whereabouts?
This is No 3 of 6 South Australian non-family photos in the album - more to come I have a Carte de Visite studio print of "Bob Whinham" by Otto von Hartitzsch 113 Rundle St Adelaide It It is hand annotated on the reverse in blue pencil with the words "R Whinham 1877" It is in good condition. My brief newspaper research points to this gentleman being The Robert Whinham, Headmaster of the Grammar School who died on 10 Oct 1884 in a tradgic fall from his horse. The photo is of someone bearded and appearing to be middle aged.putting his birth at c 1842 being of the same era as my gg grandfather Joseph Clark. I suspect that the presence of the photo album indicates both a friend and possibily of him being the headmaster of the school that Josephs younger children attended Happy to share the image (for non commercial use) with anyone with an established connection to Bob Whinham in an attempt to verify the photo against any existing copies or likenesses held by family members. This is No 2 of 6 South Australian non-family photos in the album - more to come I have a 15cm x 11cm studio print of Will and Alex Townsend by DURYEA 158 Rundle St Adelaide It has none of the usual DURYEA makings on the reverse so cannot be dated in the normal way. It is in good condition. My brief newspaper research points to these gentleman being both sons of William Townsend MP b1821 London d1882 Mitcham. If so Will is sitting on the left and Alex (who would be 5 years older) is standing on the right and behind. This fits with the index entry "Will and Alex Townsend". It is obvious that Will (the younger) is taller than his brother who has significant moustache. Opinions I have sought judge Will to be 35 and Alex to be 40 putting the photo around 1906. The studio was still operating at that time. Joseph Clark and family had been in Brisbane for 25 years at that time, however he had 4 sons who ages span the ages of the Townsend brothers. I suspect that they may have gone to St Peters College together. The photo is very late in the album and may have been posted to Brisbane. Happy to share the image (for non commercial use) with anyone with an established connection to Will, Alex or their father in an attempt to verify the photo against any existing copies or likenesses held by family members. This is one of 6 South Australian non-family photos in the album - more to come soon I have a Carte de Visite of "Geo Ayliffe" by J R Dobson & Co of "The temple of Light" (a photo studio) that is hand dated 1880 on the reverse side. It is in very good condition. My brief newspaper research points to this gentleman being "George Hamilton Ayliffe b c1840 d2Nov1906 Glenelg a son of Dr George Hamilton Ayliffe George jnr was a career public servant 2 years younger than my gg grandfather Joseph Clark who was also a senior government official. I suspect they were friends hence the photograph in the album. Hi Shaun Most important - have a user friendly but powerful genealogical database. I use PAF (Personal Ancestral File) which can be downloaded free of charge from www.familysearch.org Then whatever you discover can be stored in an orderly fashion. I've got 37 000 names in my database, most of which have biographical notes. I'm happy to step you through the process if you'd like.
