    1. [AUS-SAGEN] SA Challenge
    2. Greetings all. This challenge is proving most interesting. We have had six of out 400 reply. Here is another reply: Kylie W. wrote:As Di's already said, Google, Trove and Familysearch are invaluable. So - 393 still to reply. and you will, of course, wont you. Ian from NZ, Siggy from QLD, Peter and Alan from Melbourne - and all the rest. regarding the request about the Wellington Ferry. There were records kept about the number of vehicles who used this facility, but I dont know where they might be. Perhaps at SA Archives. Maybe Andrew Peake might tell us. There is also a nice lady in Melbourne whose family was involved with the Wellington Ferry. Naturally I cannot remember her name [must be having a senior mment]. All I can remember is she is part of the Cornish brigade. Cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm

    2. Doug Norton
    3. Hi All - In order of most used currently - 1) Trove/NLA - we have an adopted son in the family which family history/lore says was from within the family. Due to trove this is now down to 2 "candidates" of who the father or mother was. I have been able to trace fortunately through Trove who was where and when, which has eliminated many possibilities. I also spend the time correcting the reference I have found, even if it is of considerable length. 2) Australian War Memorial in site due to the fact that I have relatives with active service across all three services in both world wars. I have downloaded and are reading all the relevant official histories as well as unit histories. 3) Archives .org is a fascinating capture of our early world history and with a bit of searching, very unexpected reference books are on line to download. I have downloaded many and then put onto CD which saves hard drive space, but also allows easy searching. I am contemplating buying a kobo or kindle ereader so as to spend more time reading these. If anyone is using one comments please as I just do not want to waste $200 and not get enjoyment from it. 4) The Age (Melbourne newspaper) site as it keeps me up to date reasonably with happenings at home. 5) Rail pictures.net as I like photos of trains and trams with which I use as screensavers. Hamilton is currently 28 degrees and with a stiff northerly breeze and just on 80% humidity. I wish it would rain so as to "clear" the air. Happy New Year all. And last but not least my families of SA are Breakell, Nalty, Norton and Evans situated in Adelaide, Petersburg and Silverton so far. Doug Norton Hamilton New Zealand

    1. [AUS-SAGEN] Wellington Ferry across the Murray River
    2. Christine Cook
    3. Hi all! Just wondering if anyone knows if and where records for the Wellington Ferry may be. I have read: Traffic on the ferry increased – in February 1852, 1234 people, 1266 horses and bullocks pulling 164 carriages crossed the river; fees collected were over 64 pounds. which indicates to me that some records are somewhere. I am particularly interested in the May/June 1852 records, as that is when my ancestors used the ferry. While I don't expect to find personal details I was hoping for a copy of the month to use as an illustration in a history. Any help or suggestions appreciated. Chris.

    3. Hi Di, If it makes you feel any better, here's what I do. I ask for lookups on various CDs at times and having found that there is information relevant to my research I then budget to purchase the CD. I find I like to have these resources on hand when I can as often you can find extra info just by browsing which you hadn't thought to ask for in a lookup or it wasn't practical to ask for. Like many others I can't afford to buy before 'trying' as it were (as you know this wonderful hobby of ours could consume as many dollars as we could pour into it) and I'm so glad that there are others to help. I think it's an excellent suggestion to ask libraries to purchase copies and will do so at my local library today. Keep up the great work and my best wishes to you and your helpers Eileen ----- Original Message ----- From: <dicummings2003@email.com> To: <AUS-SAGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 11:07 PM Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] SA Gold seekers at the Victorian goldfields 1851-1853 > AUS-SAGEN-L@rootsweb.com > Brian wrote recently: > Hello All, Could I also get a look-up for this CD please ("SA Gold seekers > at the Victorian goldfields 1851-1853")...looking for Andrew or John > Holmes > (actually any Holmes would be useful). 1. [AUS-SAGEN] 'My Favourite websites' CHALLENGE
    2. I'll start this off. My most favourite websites are GOOGLE, NLS's TROVE and familysearch.org Ten years ago I began searching for my family who lived in Limavardy. JOHN HOLMES was born in 1819 at Ballynarig, near Limavady, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, to James Holmes and Jane (nee Gilfillan). He had two brothers James (1823) and David Holmes (1828). John came to Victoria sometime in the 1850s, and was 38 when he married Letitia Jenkinson (27) in 1858, at Emerald Hill. John wrote to his uncle Samuel Holmes in the 1860S about our ancestors. Samuel replied: I live in the same cottage enjoy the property and privileges of my forefathers. I have five sons James, William, Samuel, Joseph and John Holmes; five daughters Jane M, Eliza, Hannah, Ann and Ruth. The lands in Ballynarig were purchased from a John Holmes, by my great grandfather Gabriel Holmes. His son James (Sam's grandfather) was the only male heir. This was then divided among his three sons - John's grandfather, Sam's uncle and his father. Naturally I wanted to learn about those John left behind. John's brother James HOLMES was born in 1823 at Limavady, and married Maria Martin in the 1850s in N.Ireland. Their children: Jane, John, David, Thomas, Annie and Margaret. We soon found how difficult it was to locate dates etc for those on our Irish family tree, because many parish records in Northern Ireland were sent to a central depot in Ireland. Much of what was stored at this place was destroyed by fire. I googled: "James HOLMES" Ireland - and found a few listings, and two which looked a bit odd. I then googled: "Maria Holmes" Ireland - and found a few listings, and two which looked a bit odd. Naturally I checked out those that looked familiar, without much success. So I had a look at these two 'odd' ones. I was amazed to find that James and his family had moved - to Pollington, in Yorkshire. Some kind soul had transcried the 1891 and 1901 Census for Pollington, Some days we get lucky. We then searched for John McSparran and, thanks to John McSporran of Coventry, we found this part of the family too - also in Pollington, Yorkshire. This story is on the following webpage - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dicummings/Holmes.htm I've just clicked the link to this information, and found a broken link, so I googled: 1891 Census pollington Holmes and now there is nothing. I just hope I've got all the information on my 'other' computer. Lesson learnt - if you do find ome treasure, make sure you make a note of where you found it, and - if it is on the Internet, then save the page/pages onto your computer. Cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm

    1. [AUS-SAGEN] This List - you helping me, and me helping you.
    2. One of the best things about this list are the people. * This List enables those who need to know 'something quickly' - to appeal to the List for a lookup. * This List enables other listers to do that they like doing best - to help. * Being able to call on the List for help is so very wonderful - providing it's not overdone, of course. Most of those on this List have some resource material. My bookshelves can be heard to groan when I try to make room for yet another treasure. I'm thinking it's the same with quite a few of you. I really hate to think about the value dollar-wise of what's on those shelves - quite a few $$. We understand that many of us need help - in the nicest way, of course. Ros - I know that you'd darent say whatever you are thinking. Hey - stop giggling. We have every right to be wary - if the CD you've just purchased is a dudd, or the book [or CD] doesn't have what you are looking for. No-one can afford to tip money down the drain. Listers generally use books and/or CDs to answer your questions. By using these resources, they are showing you that these resources are 'good value'. Then you and I dont mind saving up to buy that book or CD, especially if it helps us break through 'that brick wall'. Ros told me tonight that there are over 400 on this list, many of whom we never 'hear' from. Soooo - I am now issuing you all - with a CHALLENGE - to all 400 of you. During this next month, I would like you all, to tell us about FIVE of your favourite websites - and why, of course. No excuses now, Christmas is over, the geese got fat and they were delicious, and I really want to "hear" from you all [on the list please] - it's too quiet here. Cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm

Weighing up the many many hours/days/weeks/months/years I have spent preparing my South Australian CDs and the costs involved [especially as I live in Melbourne], I am now in a quandary I can "look-up" and post all of the information I have on a particular person - you will be happy, but will I [as it might effect the sale of my CDs]. If I post that Mr xxx is on the CD, but do not add the extra info - what ship, how much gold, etc and then suggest you buy the CD to get the extra info, then you may well be upset SO WHAT DO I DO ???? I have answered requests from Brian, Tracey and Gwyneth but I am hesitating to answer more. I suggest that if you cannot afford the CD [which contains about 40,000 names], then ask your local Library to purchase the CD "SA Gold seekers at the Victorian goldfields 1851-1853" which had recently been reduced to half-price. visit the following website for information on a book recently published by me, to compliment the above CD. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~safpfhg/index.html ================= Greetings Tracey from Di Cummings You asked: Just wondering if anyone would have the CD - "SA Gold seekers at the Victorian goldfields 1851-1853"? 3. Hi Samantha! I notice that you have the Darragh name on your list of surnames. While I am not related, I have had help with my South Australian research from Thomas A. Darragh. If he is related I can put you in touch with him. Chris. 3. I, too, have an interest in this family and would particularly like any information anyone can provide on Jane BATTINSON who was a sister to my 3xgr-grandmother.. Here is what I know about Jane. Jane BATTINSON was baptised 8 Jun 1823 Burnley Lancashire. Parents John and Elizabeth BATTINSON. In 1839, aged 16, Jane applied to emigrate to South Australia. Her occupation was domestic servant and she was single. She travelled on the BABOO, accompanying her sister Mary who was newly married to Henry WOOD, and they arrived in March 1840. On the 14th June 1840 Jane married Thomas HUGHES in Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide. I have not been able to find anything further about either of them in Australia, but it seems Thomas was a mariner so it's likely they moved around. Jane next appears in England as a witness against her husband as reported in the Leeds Mercury March 25, 1871 in an article titled BIGAMY AT BIRKENHEAD. It seems Thomas had married another, Mary Ann ROWE, almost 17 years earlier and had eight children with her. He was sent for trial but was acquitted (Criminal Records 1791-1892). When and how did Jane BATTINSON HUGHES return to England? Did she have any children? It seems from the original report she and Thomas may have resumed a relationship. When did she die? What became of Thomas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
