    1. [AUS-SAGEN] MY Brickwall, HILTON/HIGGINS
    2. Anne Menadue
    3. If anyone has time to read this and add their thoughts I would be interested in their input. Ann, William and Henry Denyer HILTON arrived on the Morley 25.4.1840. Also on the ship MORLEY was a Charles DENYER. Henry HILTON was a printer, compositor and accountant, born 1825, Chichester England (obituary) died Adelaide 1890 age 65 Louisa HILTON Married Charles HIGGINS 1847 Died 1855 age 28 making her born 1827, NO ARRIVAL FOUND Ann HILTON born 1822, mar Charles Higgins 1856, age 34, died 1874 Now Henry Denyer HILTON and Charles HIGGINS work at the Register newspaper. Good place to meet the sisters With the lead on Henrys birth (Chichester)I came up with in Family search Marriage of George Hilton to Ann Denyer 24.12.1820, St Peter the Great, Chichester, Sussex Children of George and Ann Hilton Henry , ch 12.9.1824 Lodswoth, Sussex Ann ch 25.3.1821, Eastdean near Chichester, Sussex William ch 19.11.1822 Lodsworth, Sussex Louisa-Liegh Hilton ch 1.4.1827, Westhapnett, Sussex This appears to be the right family So where was Louisa when the siblings came to Australia? Would the family have left her in the workhouse and came to Australia without her, assuming the father died? Her brothers were educated would the laws have allowed them to leave her behind? Not sure if this is her, but I found 1841 census Class H0107 1122 book 1 Folio 52 pg 17 line 6 Civil parish Brighthelmstone, County Sussex Brighton Workhouse Louisa HILTON age 14 I checked the 1841 census in Sussex for George and Ann Hilton, nothing Would the Hilton children have been allowed to travel on their own to Australia? Ages of the three children would have been Henry, 15, William, 17, Ann, 18 on arrival. Louisa would have been only 13 if she had come. Who was the Charles DENYER on the ship? I checked 1841 census in Adelaide but none of the Hilton family appear. I have checked all the BD&M CDs for relevant records that might suggest a second marriage or death of any of the parties. I have all the children so no need for anyone to check for those. BUT Another obituary of Henry Denyer Hilton stated he arrived with his parents but there is no evidence of George and Ann in any SA records and the There was only one Charles Denyer in SA records, marrying in 1859 age 29, but he would have only been 10 when the ship arrived so cant work that one out. I found a George HILTON wife Dinah Mann having three children Henry 1856, Sarah 1858, Charles 1861 and George who died 1862 age 10 weeks. No deaths for the parents so at a loss there also no ages , was this George parent of the others and he married again? Did he come in from interstate? Did they move interstate? I cant find anything else on this family either. I have checked NSW shipping lists without success for George and Ann and Louisa. Thank you for your time Anne Menadue

    2. Paula
    3. Hi listers I am wondering if someone with a bdm disc could please do a search for the following lady. AUGUSTA ROSENTHAL b: c1855 Sth. Aust. Her parents were George Heinrich Carl (HENRY) Rosenthal & Christina Louisa Whilemina (ELIZA) Heischke. I have the pages which list the Rosendel / Rosenthal / Rosenthall entries, but Augusta isn't listed although other children of these parents are. HOWEVER, the mother's last name is given as follows: EISKE / ISCHER / EISCHA / HEISCKE as well as variations of Eliza. I'm wondering if someone could do a search on other possible spellings of Rosenthal such as Rozenthal or any other variations to see if she appears. Who knows it could have been really badly written & Rosenthal could have been read as Bosenthal. Any help would be wonderful. Thanking you for your time. Paula

This scarce image comes from the Clayton Collection, a family who lived at Yankalilla from about 1850 to 1900. John Clayton had his own photo studio in Yankalilla in the late 19th century producing cabinet photos and CDV's. He was the brother of Dr A Clayton DSO who served as a Medical Officer during WW1 at the No1 Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis. It is unusual to find an image of one of South Australia's early photographers. They photographed everything except themselves. This is a scarce item"

    1. Re: [AUS-SAGEN] records of lighthouse keepers in South Australia
    2. Andrew Peake
    3. Furher to my email regarding lighthouses, I stand by my assertion that the records, if they still exist are with the National Archives of Australia, notwithstanding that the period involved is prior to Federation and prior to legislation being enacted by the Federal Parliament. As evidence of my assertion I use as my authority, *Finding Families: The guide to the National Archives of Australia for Genealogists*, 1998. PP. 168-9 clearly indicates that they have records for various lighthouses and they date from 1853 (Cape Willoughby), 1867 (Cape Northumberland) etc. Unfortunately when SA handed over many of its responsibilities, it also handed over the records, predating the handover. Therefore go to National Archives in April, which coincidentally will be co-located with State Records, who are *not* the custodian of the records. Andrew Peake On 5 March 2011 00:27, Alan <invalidaddress@optusnet.com.au> wrote: > > My ancestors were also involved in lighthouses - the SA > Birth CD was an excellent source to track where they > were....the children a "by product" perhaps of a time bygone > era of no tv? > > Andrew Peake is correct as upon federation the Commonwealth > assumed legislative powers of the Commonwealth Parliament in > respect of Section 51 - (vii) lighthouses, lightships, > beacons and buoys - see > http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/coaca430/s51.html > > So clearly the inquiry would have initially seemed to have > fallen within the Commonwealth's era of control for that > function but however one must have regard to the fact the > Commonwealth only then legislated in 1911 for lighthouses. > That came into effect by a Gazette notice dated 1 July 1915 > (Gazette 1915, p. 1183). > > Thus it might be better to fall back to State Records for > that time of interest. > > A book called "The Cape Jaffa Lighthouse Story" by Vern > McLaren 1977 details that light house history. 1. [AUS-SAGEN] records of lighthouse keepers in South Australia
    2. Alan
    3. My ancestors were also involved in lighthouses - the SA Birth CD was an excellent source to track where they were....the children a "by product" perhaps of a time bygone era of no tv? Andrew Peake is correct as upon federation the Commonwealth assumed legislative powers of the Commonwealth Parliament in respect of Section 51 - (vii) lighthouses, lightships, beacons and buoys - see http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/coaca430/s51.html So clearly the inquiry would have initially seemed to have fallen within the Commonwealth's era of control for that function but however one must have regard to the fact the Commonwealth only then legislated in 1911 for lighthouses. That came into effect by a Gazette notice dated 1 July 1915 (Gazette 1915, p. 1183). Thus it might be better to fall back to State Records for that time of interest. A book called "The Cape Jaffa Lighthouse Story" by Vern McLaren 1977 details that light house history. At page 11 it details "during the years 1864 to 1865 there was increasing agitation by insurance offices, ship owners and ship masters to have a lighthouse placed on the "Margaret Brock" reef" - page 11 Page 26 "The lighthouses were not run by the Federal Government in those days but a Marine Board stationed at Port Adelaide and each State had its own arrangement..." Thus it might be better not to ignore the sources of State Records and Archives in this instance Appendix - "Keepers who signed the Log books of Cape Jaffa Lighthouse in order from 1872 to 1900 were: J.C. Bartlett, J. Montgomery, A. Bruce, J.H. Taylor, G.E. Leslie, W. Kopp, J.M. Brimage, E.Parker, G. Duthie, T.W. Rackett, V.S.W. Edmunds, T.Boyse, E.L. Mackett, W. Furnell, W.Uden, O.Frank, C.H. West, J. Jameson, J.Hilton, S. Wilke, A.Young, E.S. Payne. Book contains a number of pictures of families involved there . Regards Alan Melbourne
