Given that we are descendants of Edward and Elizabeth GILES, for simplicity the reunion has been named Giles, yet includes large families of Matthews, Aldersey, Francis and others. I hope you will be able to attend all events but of course are welcome to attend as many as you would like and suggest that every family member orders our book “A History of Descendants of Edward and Elizabeth Giles and their families in Australia, 1839-2011”.
Hi Listers Information was requested about Harry Robinson who had left his wife and 4 children destitute in Durban, South Africa. For a short time he worked at Wallaroo Smelting Works. He intended to leave for Sydney and thence San Francisco. One may well wonder where in the world he went and what happened to his family. This is just one of many intriguing entries of deserters, missing persons and absconders found in the SA Police Gazettes. Further years have been added to the database "Persons Lost & Found" which now covers 1838-1910. http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/deserters.html Bye Maureen M Leadbeater Adelaide Co-operative History www.ach.familyhistorysa.info

Hi All, I have spent weeks now looking for the date of arrival and the name of the ship my GGGrandparents John and Louisa Richards came to Australia in. I have purchased both their death certificates that indicate that they were married in London in 1850. Thier first child was born in Geelong in Victoria in 1852 so i presume they came to Australia in 1851. I have checked the 1852-1923 shipping lists and they do not appear there. I have also gone to the Australian Shipping, Shipping Lists - N.S.W., the Ship Lists site and Trove with no success. I have spent many, many hours perusing the Trove site inserting "Richards" but each time i try to refine the search by adding John and Louisa's names and also shipping i only seem to increase the available possibilities. I have inserted the "Argus" newspaper but still get all the newspapers. Could somebody please offer me advice when searching Trove as to the best possible text for me to insert to limit the number of entries to search, as at the moment i am trying to search thousands of possibilities and are going crazy. Thanks Alan

There is no reference to this or the people concerned in The History and Topography of Glen Osmond dated 1905. At least it rules out a possibility. I am a descendant of JOSEPH* DICKESON : born Circa 1710 London England : Married Grace nee Eyre Circa 1734. They had 7 children - Joseph : Elizabeth : Valentine : Ambrose : Thomas : William : Joshua** : John Henry*** and Millicent. Joseph* died 1784 London England. My line is from Joshua** - it was his Great Grandson, Joshua James Dickeson, who came to Australia Circa 1850's As well as Joshua James Dickeson, I believe that there were at least 2 other Dickeson family members that also came out to Australia........... ? When. # Thomas Dickeson ~ [brother of Joshua James] - born Circa 1830 Newington Surrey England - died 1894 @ St Arnaurd Victoria - Did not marry. # Mark Dickeson ~ born Circa 1846 Surrey England and died 1916 Adelaide South Australia. Mark Dickeson was the son of Ambrose Dickeson / Grandson of John Henry *** Dickeson / Great Grandson of Joseph* Dickeson. Do any of these names connect with your Dickeson interests ? Look forward to hearing from you. Cheers . . . . . . . . Hi Jane Quoting from "Balaklava Change and Challenge" compiled by The Balaklava Centenary Book Committee, 1977 p97 "In 1911 Mr. R. J. Finlayson of Owen, built and operated a butter, ice and cool drink factory in Balaklava. Besides prospering as a business, this enterprise was a great asset to the district as it catered for a large area around Balaklava. Butter made at this factory, produced from local cream, won many prizes including champioships both in Australia and overseas." and on page 91 "Mr. Middleton later .... take over the Balaklava Dairy." (sometime after 1912) I suggest you try TROVE for articles and advertising. Hello, I am looking for information on the butter factory that was once at Balaklava. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Jane
Hello Listers From a newspaper report, a friend of mine has found out that James SNOW aged 22, an employee of Glen Osmond Mine and her ggf's brother, was on trial in South Australia in May-June 1848 for the manslaughter of Edmund OLLIVER. We haven't found a later paper (through Trove) with the 'end of the story' in it. From the tenor of the reports found, it seems quite likely that he was convicted. Can anyone point us in the right direction to find the length of his sentence please? Are there Government papers available that would cover this? My friend is trying to work out if an 1855 marriage in England was his - he came from Cornwall to Australia - or if his length of sentence made this impossible. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Several years ago, I was given a copy of a photograph which was displayed in the Red Hill Museum (Sth Aust) It is a group of 10 men (2 rows of five) who may well have been the "Red Hill Chamber of Commerce" One man is obviously the local butcher I would be very grateful to find out further details of this photograph, as my ggrandfather is one of the 10 men Regards Chris Pycroft (nee GWYNNE) Port Augusta, Sth Aust
Thank you to everyone who helped me out re my enquires. Cheers Judy

Hi List I've been in the Tasmanian rootsweb list for a number of years and found people extremely helpful. In addition to finding a lot of info about my family, I can't tell you how much I've learnt about Tasmanian history just by reading the messages, even when not directly relevant to my own research! William Smith and Caroline Pitman married in 1845 Adelaide, South Australia. They did not have parents on the certificate. I wonder if they can be found in the Biographical Index of SA. Smith is such a sod of a name I think I might be stuck. Did they die in SA? Cheers. Pat
