    3. Please don't get me wrong I love WDYTYA and have though hubby isn't really interested much if any ( I think at times LOL) in genealogy he enjoys watching it too. And I love everything that is connected to genealogy, as well as I have the genealogists's disease and proud of it. Kind Regards, Judy. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Robyn Coates Sent: Thursday, 6 March 2014 9:19 AM To: 'Stephanie Cocks'; 'Morley'; 'AUS - SAGEN' Subject: Re: [AUS-SAGEN] Another peie of Family History FWIW I must admit that I like WDYTYA and have bought all the DVDs so I can re-watch them. Though I found the US series a bit over the top but never-the-less interesting as my knowledge of US history is not as good as it should be. We see these 'celebrities' on the TV or big screen and quite often we know very little of them and I have found it enlightening to learn more of their lives. Okay some may not want to learn any more, but I find the study of humans a fascinating topic. I also enjoy learning of all the resources that the researchers use. I would agree the participants are handed it all on a silver platter, but none-the-less it has given me some hints as to where to look for those elusive relatives. I enjoy using Ancestry and Find my Past and I the British WDYTYA monthly magazine which has given me hours of reading - so I endure the Ancestry ads as I know they need to make money to be able to provide the services we enjoy. 3. Have watched a sprinkling of both the UK and Aussie WDYTYA's, particularly enjoyed some of the Australian series. Cynical, no I don't think so Jill. I see the programmes as a brilliant advertising campaign (they make it look SO easy, and of course fly off to wherever for their research) for Ancestry. 3. Hi All, Wondering if there is a Lister that is connected to the Above Family at all? Years ago a man who has deceased since, and was Samuel Holding's descendant and I were in touch and met up. He was going to give the Family Tree of His Holding to me, but as he was in a suburb of Adelaide and I,myself living in country S.A. it never happened. He didn't trust Australia Post to post it to me by snail mail. He died before it transpired and I never had his family / children's address so guess all of the Info went by the way. Unfortunate, we had been trying till he got Ill, to work out if his Holding was related to my Husband's Holding, seemed as if they came from different parts of England , BUT the shires were very close to each other, so who knows ??. Samuel and Jane HOLDING lived at Mt Gambier my husband's Holding's in Pt Pass, Eudunda, Sliding Rock. S.A. Geranium Plains ( near Robertstown S.A.) and two sons of William and Emma HOLDING nee THOMPSON in about 1890 went overland to Swan Hill district in Victoria And had more children and died over there. They were , Samuel and John Holding both married two sisters the WARNER girls. Hoping I can find a Lister out there that may be connected to the Mt Gambier Holding's, I believe quite a few of that family of Samuel and Jane nee BELL went over to W.A. to live. Many thanks in advance, Kind regards, Judy.

    3. Rhonda on the 1884 death registration of Mary IRVING you will get no more info than what you have now it wasn't till 1908 that deaths in South Australia mentioned where born and how long in colony and number of children alive and deceased already If they were Catholic then I strongly suggest you have someone look at Catholic Church registers that we hold at Genealogy SA too as they sometimes have tip bits of extra info but this is not a rule I see they married in the Wesleyan mission (Methodist) but one or other may have been a Catholic - long shot of course a look for the church record might be more helpful if its available still probably at Genealogy SA too Shipping records would be a good place to look also held at Genealogy SA If they married here in SA and were ex-convicts then they would have come overland or by boat at that time. Many ex-convicts drifted over to South Australia in the early days when their terms expired some even changing their surnames the web site TROVE wasn't fruitful for a Obituary or clue either you have two Thomas IRVING one in Naracoorte and one in Robe in the directory 1890 - One is Thomas Halliday IRVING (the middle name is your big clue - its usually a surname taken from the Maternal side of the family mother or grandmother but not always Who is this Thomas Halliday IRVING?) died 6 October 1898 age 71 Farmer (born circa 1827) Hundred of Robertson , Robe District 1890 Sands and McDougall directory = Thomas H IRVING Farmer near Naracoorte 1890 Thomas IRVING sheep farmer near Lucindale (thats near Robe to) 1899 Thomas IRVING sheep farmer near Lucindale Surname: IRVING Given Names: Isabella Date: 1859-12-26 Sex: F Father: Thomas IRVING Mother: Mary Elizabeth MADDEN Birth Place/Residence: Mount Pleasant ( there is a reference to a "Thomas IRVING" his wife dying in Trove with a Alias of "CALIFORNIA TOM" but seems to be a generation older District Code: Tal Symbol: Book: 18 Page: 295 Cross Reference: Surname: IRVING Given Names: Jessie Core Date: 1877-01-22 Sex: F Father: Hinnas IRVING Mother: Mary Elizabeth MADDEN Birth Place/Residence: Blanchetown District Code: Ang Symbol: V Book: 177 Page: 373 Cross Reference: Surname: IRVING Given Names: Isabella Ethel Mazral Date: 1881-03-16 Sex: F Father: Joseph Anthony MAZRAL Mother: Mary Elizabeth IRVING @ (nee) MADDEN Birth Place/Residence: Morgan District Code: Bur Symbol: X Book: 257 Page: 164 Cross Reference: See also: MAZRAL Isabella Ethel John Day Volunteer at Genealogy SA also known as South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society Inc DEATH DETAILS: DATE: 1884 NO: 137/207 SURNAME: IRVING FIRST NAME: Mary HUSBAND: Thomas IRVING (H) DIED DISTRICT: Robe (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) The marriage details for Mary MADDEN and Thomas IRVING: Year Date Surname Given Names Age Mar. 3. Hello listers Can sks please do a look up for me? I have a Mary Elizabeth MADDEN (born circa 1838 possibly Ireland) who married a Thomas IRVING in 10/5/1858 Wesleyan Mission, Adelaide, South Australia. Mary's father was Thomas MADDEN (according to the marriage details) and Thomas IRVING'S father was Thomas IRVING. Mary could be one of two convicts who were convicted 1854 OR she may be an immigrant to Australia. I'm not sure. Thomas IRVING, her husband could be a convict from Cumberland, UK sent out here in 1840 on the Eden OR he could be a different Thomas IRVING. I do have a record for Thomas IRVING from Cumberland with his conviction etc. As you can see my greatest problem is to see if the death or marriage details have a place of birth on them for both of them. 3. Thanks to everyone for their input into trying to locate the whereabouts of the house which was supposedly the home of Governor Gawler, occupied by RM Williams at one time. We did find the location of the house featured in the ABC programme about the Williams family, featured on tv recently. It is 125 Strangways Terrace North Adelaide, which was owned by the McGregor family. Still to locate the Governor's home, which RM Williams speaks of in his autobiography, as being near the home in Strangways Terrace. Thanks everyone, Amanda.

Naturally for the show, researchers working behind the scenes and do it all for the person and not like a hard slog and frustration us genealogists experience in the real world of genealogy. Well Jill I must be the same as you and don't think either of us are cynical and agree with all you say below. 3. Yes, it is all over Australia. I think the 'privacy' concerns are a concern! There are people who are not on the electoral roll the same way they have unlisted phone numbers for very specific reasons. That should be sufficient 'privacy'. I understand this and agree wholeheartedly with it but I do not understand why the rest of the population has to be protected. Electoral rolls - in the past - had occupations and the date when the person went on that roll. The same people are on facebook and post the most intimate details. regards to all Suzy

    3. Hi Christine I had a look in the Contact Us section of Trove and this is what I found; http://trove.nla.gov.au/forum/showthread.php?1631-Important-difficulties-accessing-newspaper-articles-with-particular-searches Hope this helps, Kylie [image: Exclamation] Important - 400 or Bad Request error when accessing newspaper articles from searches When using Trove newspapers you may find that you are unable to access search results when doing particular searches. Specifically, when selecting all Victorian or all New South Wales newspapers, or a combination that includes either of these options, from the Advanced Search form or by selecting 'limit to all XXX papers' you may receive a 400 - Bad Request error when trying to access an article from your search results. The reason that you receive this error is due to the way that the advanced search currently handles selections of multiple newspapers, and the number of newspapers for Victoria and New South Wales means that when everything is selected for either of these states we end up with a situation where web browsers are unable to handle the request. We are working on a solution for this error, however we do not currently have a timeframe for when these fixes will appear in Trove. In the meantime, you will need to take a different approach when searching within Victorian or New South Wales newspapers. A few suggestions: - Try searching across all newspapers in Trove first - If you have a known date range, only select newspapers that are available within this date range - If you have a known area, only select newspapers from this area - Systematically go through the list of newspapers for the state searching a subset at a time (you can select about 200 titles before getting the error) - If using *Chrome*, try refreshing the page after receiving the error message We apologise for the inconvenience that this causes, and hope to be able to provide some more information about the matter being fixed soon.
