    3. Josie, sorry about the typos on the earlier answer (I should have read it more carefully before hitting 'send'). That place name was Bridens Camp (you can find it on Google maps). The children were those of Henry & Eliza. New stuff: That family, Henry through to Emma, are in Great Gaddesden in the 1841 census, on the first page of District 7, with an interesting address 'Old Kill'. (Bridens Camp is on the next page.) In 1851 it seems Sarah was captured twice by the enumerators, once with her sister (ie. the Butterfields), then again at home with her mother & siblings (and grandmother) at 57 Gaddesden Row: Eliza Hooker widow, straw platter, b. abt 1807; Anne Hooker daughter b. abt 1836; Sarah Hooker, daughter b. abt 1838; Emma Hooker, daughter born abt 1840, Charlott Mitchel, mother, b.abt 1779 (out of county), William Lovett, son-in-law b. abt 1827, Charlotte Lovett, daughter b. abt 1830. Henry Hooker married Eliza Mitchel (sic) 18 Feb 1827 Redbourne, Hertfordshire (FHL File No 991319) Elizar (sic) Mitchel was baptised 15 Jun 1806 Great Gaddisden, daughter of William Michel & Charlotta (FHL Film no 1537873) rgds, Barry

    3. Hi Rowena Thank you for your comprehensive guide to using Trove. Please forgive for pointing out a minor omission in your text.  Readers should note that in many newspapers Funeral Notices are in the Advertising section and not in Family Notices of Trove. This is annoying when looking for Funeral Notices as all sorts of advertising is included but when one thinks about it they are strictly advertising. Cheers Ian in Perth ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rowena Gough" To: Cc: Sent:Thu, 7 Aug 2014 15:53:13 +1000 Subject:[AUS-SAGEN] Trove Correction Tips Dear List Just to confirm that I'm not actually organizing anyone to do anything, just putting forward a suggestion. I also realize that correcting material on Trove may not seem straightforward at first. Some tips on using Trove may be useful, below. ***First sign up a username and password to login, otherwise as an anonymous user, your changes will require you to continuously resubmit through a security system. ***Always go into the "Advanced search" page for "Digitized newspapers". ***The top selection boxes allow you to search in various ways. I generally only use the top box, and search on a specific family surname. If correcting "Family Notices" in general in a newspaper, I would leave this area blank. You could also search on the words "obituary". You could use the 2nd box for a phrase, and insert "killed in action" if searching for war dead notices (however, these may be reprinted state lists from a capital city newspaper). ***Next go into the "State and Titles" box, click on the state "Shoe Titles" and then scroll through to find the specific newspaper that you want to search and click in the small box to the left. You can choose as many papers as you want in a search (useful if you are searching on a particular surname). ***If the newspaper has been scanned beyond the 1914-1918 time frame, you can go into the "Publication Date" boxes and specify the years and dates. ***Scroll to the bottom selection boxes under "Article Category", and select "Family Notices" and/or "Article". ***Having pressed the green search button and brought up a list of newspapers, open the "Family Notice" Your page is broken into 2 sections - on the right an image of the newspaper print, and on the left a column which you can type into You can scroll down the left column until you find your search word highlighted in yellow. Clicking on "Fix this Text" will allow you to retype any text which needs to be corrected, including commas, full stops, hyphens, etc. ***If you can't read the text of the newspaper clearly, blow it up to a size that allows you to read the print by using the zoom button on the bottom right hand side. This will allow you to clearly read the text. If it is so faded or blobbed with ink that you can't read it, leave the text and don't correct it. best not to make guesses with someone else's name. Do re-size your newsprint page before beginning to make corrections or it will keep asking if you want to leave the page. ***Do save your corrections regularly. If the system freezes for some reason, all your hard work will be lost. ***Note, after you click on "Fix this text", a very useful grey box called "Insert Symbol" appears. It has a range of fractions, lengthened hyphens, pound signs etc, commonly used in the old newspapers. ***Also, if you are correcting text and run out of space, and pink box will appear which gives you the option to click in it to lengthen the line and keep typing. Trust this will be useful information. 1. [AUS-SAGEN] WW1 and Trove Newspapers
    2. Rowena Gough via
    3. Dear List, We all know that it is the 100th anniversary of the First World War. In commemoration, Trove has aimed to put all newspapers published in Australia between 1914-1918 on their website. For those of you unfamiliar with Trove, it is a massive digization project being undertaken by the National Library of Australia. Most of these newspapers need corrections to the printed material, as the electronic scanners rarely read the print clearly. For instance names may appear quite scrambled, and this can throw search results off. Correcting the text does help folk who are doing specific name searches. As a personal project for myself, and in memory of the members of my family who fell in WW1, I have been working to correct the family notices, obituaries, lists of those injured or killed in action, for the newspaper of my home town. I thought that this may be helpful for other folk researching their families. I like to suggest that if you have some time to devote to correcting Trove newspapers, perhaps for the town that you were born in or that your family came from, or your family name, that this is a fine year to start such a personal and community project. The rules governing the correction of text of published newspapers in Trove, are pretty straightforward, and can be read on the website. Basically, text and dates must be corrected as it appears on the page of the newspaper. This includes spelling, date and grammatical errors, even if you personally know that the date or the spelling of the name is different, you must duplicate the visual material as it appears in the published text. You are not meant to change things, or simplify them. I hope that some of you will be interested to be involved, or just to have a go, and together we can make a personal contribution to commemorate those who went before. Kind regards to all, Rowena
