Sorry to disagree with you Jill but I thought it was wonderful and very moving. These things happened in those days when there were so few white settlers here, and although Walter didn't appear on the child's birth certificate he raised the child as his own, since the child's mother was his wife. Do you know that Adam Goods hasn't had a DNA test? Or any of his many cousins who also descend from Walter Hughes? Hi Lyn, Oh thank you for taking the time to send through all those, with a surname like Smith especially! I actually just need the deaths of a Thomas Smith though. I'm trying to narrow down the amount of Thomas Smith death certificates I need to order so I can find the right one, at the moment I'm at about 6 certificates from the index on the South Australia genealogy site but they don't give ages so I'm hoping to narrow it down a little more so it's not quite so expensive! He was born around 1825 and I think he died either in 1886 or 1903. He would have been about 61 years of age in 1886 and about 78 in 1903. I think his death would be in the Adelaide or Norwood districts. Thanks, Tam -------------------------------------------------- From: "Lyn" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 12, 2014 4:09 PM To: "tam smith" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [AUS-SAGEN] death Corrected and resent: In the 1851 census Sarah Hooker, abt 14 y.o. (so born abt. 1837) , appears to be the sister-in-law in Gt. Gaddesden with the family of William & Mary Ann Butterfield; so Mary Ann, b. abt 1828, must have been her sister. There are two children with that family, born abt 1849 & 1850, so one would expect they married abt 1848. In fact Mary Ann Hooker aged abt 20 years married William Butterfield 25 Dec 1847 Gt. Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, her father Henry Hooker (FHL Film number 1537873) In 1861 she appears to be the Sarah Hooker in Caddington, Hertfordshire, b.abt 1837 at Bridens Camp, Hertfordshire (nearby Gt Gaddesden), servant with the Goodyear family. Sarah Hooker, b.abt 1838 appears to be she who married Philip Duncombe 9 Jun 1864 Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, her father Henry Hooker (FHL Film number 1042387) I found evidence of a just seven children of Sarah & Eliza Hooker born in Gt. Gaddesden, but no sign of Sarah's baptism (?): Amelia bapt 15 Sep 1833; Emma bapt 22 Mar 1840; Ann bapt 8 Nov 1835; Susan bapt 23 Oct 1831; William bapt 13 Feb 1842; Mary Ann bapt 8 Aug 1827 (she who married William Butterfield); Charlotte bapt 27 Dec 1829 Gt. Gaddesden belonged to the Hemel Hempstead registration district, so Sarah's birth is most likely that registered 1Q 1838 Hemel Hempstead 6_453. **You'll need to order that birth certificate to be sure.** (I had a good look to see if I could find Sarah's baptism in Gt Gaddesden or the surrounding parishes, perhaps with her surname mis-transcribed, or perhaps baptized years later, but didn't find anything.) That family, Henry through to Emma, are in Great Gaddesden in the 1841 census, on the first page of District 7, with an interesting address 'Old Kill'. (Bridens Camp is on the next page.) In 1851 it seems Sarah was captured twice by the enumerators, once with her sister (ie. the Butterfields), then again at home with her mother & siblings (and grandmother) at 57 Gaddesden Row: Eliza Hooker widow, straw platter, b. abt 1807; Anne Hooker daughter b. abt 1836; Sarah Hooker, daughter b. abt 1838; Emma Hooker, daughter born abt 1840, Charlott Mitchel, mother, b.abt 1779 (out of county), William Lovett, son-in-law b. abt 1827, Charlotte Lovett, daughter b. abt 1830. Henry Hooker married Eliza Mitchel (sic) 18 Feb 1827 Redbourne, Hertfordshire (FHL File No 991319) Elizar (sic) Mitchel was baptised 15 Jun 1806 Great Gaddisden, daughter of William Mitchel & Charlotta (FHL Film no 1537873) rgds, Barry

Good Morning can anyone tell me of there is a web site that may have a picture of a monument in Mount Gambier in 1875 this is what it looks like according to the newspapers? Or indeed if any one has a photo of this monument? ---- The BUCHAN Monument— 'The monument to the memory of Mary Julia Buchan, was was murdered by William Page, has now been erected in the Mount Gambier Cemetery,' reports the Watch of November 20. 'It is a very hand- some and appropriate structure, and in every way a credit to the taste of the Committee who selected it and the sculptor who executed the order (Mr. J. Hanson, Melbourne). It is com- posed of a very pretty grey stone, with marble mountings and panels. There are two basement courses, on which are set the die with the marble panels. Over this is a cap on which is placed the marble base of the shaft, which rises over all to the height of about 14 feet. The shaft is surmounted by a floral finial. The whole thing has a chaste and effective appearance. The front panel bears the following inscription:— 'Erected by the ladies of Mount Gambier to the memory of Mary Julia Buchan, aged 19 years, who fell a victim to the hands of an assassin 11th July, 1875. On the back panel is the following verse: — ' ' Our days are as the grass, Or like the morning flower; If one sharp blast sweep o'er the field It withers in an hour.' The two side panels have the following passages of Scripture: — 'For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.' ' There is but a step between us and death.' 'Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh.' ' Sudden Death.— ---- I would very much like a picture and live in Kadina so it is a little hard to go there? I am not even sure if is still standing?? Thankyou Jill Jill [ARNOLD] MORLEY [email protected]
Hello, I just wanted to try and narrow down my death certificate order in looking for a possible ancestor. His name was Thomas Smith (wife who had died before him was Louisa), he was born circa 1825. There are a few deaths for Thomas Smith in 1886 (2 or 3) and a death in 1903. They were living in the Adelaide or Norwood districts I believe. Are there ages in the index's listers have which might help me narrow it down some so it's not too expensive an order? He would have been about 61 in 1886 and about 78 in 1903. Thank you so much, Tam
This list is a fantastic place. Many thanks for all the help and suggestions to track down my McKenzie in NZ from so many listers. I feel much more hopeful! -- *Sue Sifa*
Hi Mary Ann! Thank you! Well that must be why I can't find their birth dates in my notes :( The last one you sent (Mary 1880) is definitely one of the three children (my ancestor) and the others were to another couple by the same names. Its strange that Mary was registered but the other two weren't, I'd REALLY like their birth certificates for information! Was it usual for Catholics to not register births? I wasn't aware of that, Thanks again, Tam -------------------------------------------------- From: "Mary Ann Minor" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 11, 2014 9:23 PM To: "'tam smith'" <[email protected]> Subject: RE: [AUS-SAGEN] birth look up please 1881 and 1885 > Hi Tam, > > Haven't seen any postings from you for ages. Hello, I'm trying to organise all my notes at the moment and I've misplaced a couple of births for my family. I tried to find them on ancestry and using the online SA index but there weren't any matches, very strange. I know their birth years as they were christened/baptised in the Catholic Church (I have also lost one of those dates!) and I had someone look that up for me a few years ago, but I'd like to order the birth certificates and I'm confused about why I can't find them! Their names were: JOHN COLLINS son of John Collins and Mary Smith born 1881 CATHERINE COLLINS daughter of John Collins and Mary Smith born 1885 Should be the Adelaide district I imagine for both of them as they were living in the Mitcham area. Thank you, Tam
Hi Sue and Andrew I found this - it may help https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/New_Zealand,_Archives_New_Zealand,_Probate_Records_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records) Robyn
If a person dies estate and the estate is significant enough to require a legal process to wind it up, next of kin or someone else (e.g. Public Trustee) have to apply to the Probate Court for Letters of Administation. The document indicates the name and details of the deceased individual and the name of the Administrator and generally their connection to the deceased and possibly the value of the estate. Whether an inventory is still available will depend upon the Probate Court. In SA this record doesn't exist, but it does for example in Victoria. Jill If you enter "marriage" then scroll down to the box that says "date of event range" click on arrow and change it to "yes" and you can enter a date range. I ask you what happened to the search engine where at least you could put a year range to see if they were Born Married or Died there? If anyone is using this and can tell me where else to look that would be great? Jill Good Morning, Apologies for the inconvenience. The Family History Search has moved since 17 July 2014. Morning Jill I found if you put a question mark ? In the fields you do not know it seems to work. There used to be a way we could search? now it appears they have changed it and will not give us anything unless we know all the details? Thanks to Robyn for pointing me towards Papers Past. I found the clearing sail for my William McKenzie. Now I'm wondering if someone dies intestate would there be a probate or similar document that might tell me more about him? thanks Sue On Mon, Aug 11, 2014 at 8:32 AM, Robyn Coates <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Sue > Try Papers Past: > http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast > > Happy hunting > > Robyn > > -- *Sue Sifa*
