    3. As I said to Leita and Rowena What makes me laugh is that all I said is that poor man - no names or race was mentioned- you have all turned my first letter into a racial argument- shame on you all we as family historians are suppose to believe this was how we do it? the list then took my comments as racial - I think they are racial -I do not see colour in people just names- god know I am not a bit racial and I will take action against anyone who says I am - this I mean Before you comment read my first email to the list I want honestly in my trees not Ancestry.com made up stories - that sell subscriptions to their web site. Some people including you have read all I said absolutely wrong - If this was about anyone else nobody would have said anything about my comments I wonder who is racial and who just want the truth in Family History What happened to sanity- Jill -----Original Message----- From: Rowena Gough via Sent: Friday, August 15, 2014 10:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Who Do You Think You Are Good on you Leita, Well said. I think one has to be open minded with regard to the television programs tracing family history. They do the best job that they can to entertain, to generate public interest, and to show that it is possible to trace your family (and generate more subscribers to Ancestry). I cannot imagine how difficult, frustrating and distressing it may be for folk with aboriginal roots to find information. Including their stories in these programs is incredibly important for our understanding of ourselves as a large nation with a rich, complex and somewhat troubled history. Now, can we put the discussion of this program to a close? 3. Genealogy SA at 201 Unley Road, Unley has a book or two on dating photos I think as would the state library perhaps you could try those places first other family history professional researchers on line profess to be able to date photos too in South Australia For others of you on this list if you havn't been to Genealogy SA at Unley ever or even recently the amount of material and computers you can use as a visitor or a member is mind boggling they are subscribed to at least 5 different online pay web sites that I know of and it will only cost you about 15 dollars for a 3 hour visit (you get about 600 dollars worth of pay sites to use for a 1/2 days visitors fee or join up for a year for 100 dollars - If you want to know more about the tons of info that is at Genealogy SA and not on line yet send me a email - the volunteers are very helpful too and knowledgeable John H Day -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steve Medley via Sent: Wednesday, 13 August 2014 1:41 PM To: South Australian Gene Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Dating a photograph. 2. tam smith via
    3. Hello again! Sorry I've got another look up request, I really need to buy these cds myself one of these days! I'm trying to pinpoint who a close family friend was. Her name was Maria Ann Rabbit. She was the Godmother of one of my family members in 1885. I presume she was probably about the same age as the parents, so born around 1850-1860. If she was unmarried she would have married shortly after 1885 I would imagine and if she had already married it probably would have been 1870-1885. She would have lived in the Mitcham, Goodwood area of Adelaide. I would really appreciate a look up for anything in the index's on her, I've hit a dead end with my ancestor so I'm hoping that if I can gather enough information about her community/close friends etc it might help turn something up. It'd be great to learn more about the Godmother anyway even if it doesn't help in the long run! Thanks so much, Tam

    3. Hello Steve, Are you lucky enough to have the name of the photographer/studio on the back or even on the front of the photo? You could look on TROVE to find the years of operation. If it's a South Australian photograph you may find this link helpful http://www.artgallery.sa.gov.au/noye/Photogs/A_small.htm although there were many more photographers than listed here. If there's no photographer or studio noted then clothing styles would be worth a try although not terribly exact. Do you have any clues to the subjects of the photos? Perhaps you could upload it to one of the popular photo websites so members of the group could offer suggestions. Good luck Eileen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Medley via" <[email protected]> To: "South Australian Gene" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 13, 2014 1:41 PM Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Dating a photograph. > Hi > I was wondering if anyone out there has much of a clue on how to date a > photograph, that appears to be taken in the mid 1800's > I have looked on the web without much success. > Thanks > Steve

    3. "Who do you think you are" has done a tremendous amount to popularise interest in genealogy for the masses. The producers obviously seek to maximise interest for the viewer by creating a story line that takes short cuts. Nevertheless, we who have a genuine interest and do the hard research, should welcome the exposure that the program provides, albeit it's commercial nature. 2. Leita Fennel via
    3. Well have read all the comments regarding last nights program Adam Goode First of all think about it aren't we lucky to be white Australians and have all or most of our family's BMD registered so that we can trace our Ancestors I know how difficult it is to trace Family Lines for our Aboriginal population as a researcher in the Upper North of our State I am often asked to do this Unfortunately until well after 1900 Registration was not done or deemed necessary for or by many of these people and if a Death was registered it was most likely i.e. Jimmy Aboriginal If a Birth was Registered especially with a white fathers the mother was only listed by her Christian (quite often European not her tribal name) name then Aboriginal. I did research for this particular program on Jessie and while there could have been many stories woven about her the program only reported the known facts which were few, so how do we know what they reported about other Ancestors of Adam was not true. Sorry if I've upset some people Don't often mail the list in this way Cheers Leita

    3. Me too. I have a distant cousin who is relatively new to research. Doesn't listen. Never verifies. Takes newspaper accounts as gospel. Immediately agrees with whatever someone new says whether it Dan be proven or not. Draws very long bows. arrrrrrrgh. After building on 30 years of proven research with almost 20 of my own it drives me nuts!!!!! I love watching the show but get cranky with some very long bows drawn. Verify once. Verify twice with a different source and once more if you can be for I say "most probably " is my motto. I am not referring to genuine mistakes but to sloppy research that can be be corrected by due diligence. 3. I agree with you Jill. When the show is good, it is very good. I think it is victim of its own success. I have felt for a while that emotions appear to be far more important that the product (family history). Some of the people in the program seem to be 'acting' a role instead of being themselves ... being what they think they should be for the audience. It also looks to me as if the searches are selected for impact. But that's television! regards to all Suzy
