A part of reorganising my work area I consigned a number of books into storage One took my interest again as my grand father worked on a sailing ship of the White Star line I was fairly set in my mind that sailing ships used the 'roaring fourties' to come across to Australia In the booklet 'Settlers under Sail" by Don Charlwood he mentions aspects which I had overlooked - as such I thought it worthy of repeating in brief form that to the list 1. an essential instrument was a reliable chronometer 2. they were generally set on Greenwich Mean Time through out the voyage (for GMT one can see references now being also UCT - universal coordinated time) 3. where the navigator could see the sun at it zenith he could determine how many hours it varied from GMT 4. Each hour of difference equated to 15 degrees from Greenwich and so he could determine the longitude of the ship 5. The same sighting, by reference to navigational tables could provide latitude 6. In COOK's time chronometers were expensive 7. John TOWSON of Liverpool produced small cheap models and as the examiner of ships at Liverpool urged each master going to Australia to follow the composite great circle* 8. Astonishing short passage times can about because of this 9. Masters were no longer bound to the roaring fourties from Cape Town to Cape Otway (that destination mentioned as this book in the main focused on Victorian shipping) 10. Ships often sailed 800 miles south of Cape Town - latitudes of 50 or even 55 degrees south 11. Darkness often fell soon after 4pm I thought this was interesting and informative regards Alan HALL Melbourne * great circle route - the shortest course between two points on the surface of a sphere. It lies in a plane that intersects the sphere's centre and was known by mathematicians before the time of Columbus.
Hi I think it is a good idea to back your files up not just to an external drive but you can use services like Google Drive and Dropbox. They are free for basic accounts. This means if your DVDs or usb sticks or external drives stop working then there is a backup. I still think we should keep paper copies. I know storage becomes a problem but paper will always be readable. However, the disadvantage is you need to use archival quality paper and archival storage boxes. It gets expensive, but I feel better having paper copies. Then you got to consider fire - I know someone that lost 20 years of genealogical research in a fire. My paper copies are in a storage shed. The paper and boxes and storage shed sends me broke but my records are safe lol - 1. B acked up to external drive 2. On Dropbox 3. On Google Drive 4. Paper copies in a storage shed. Hi Lyn I hear what you say but one of the main reasons I bought a digital camera was because the photo albums were starting to mount up – I have 10 and it was becoming a real storage problem. We tend to take lots more photos with digital cameras so soon I would have a room full of photo albums. I have all my photos on the computer backed up so should not lose them in the event of a computer crash, but I do admit that the future technology changes, as you mention, do concern me a bit. Anyone else got any thoughts on this subject? Cheers Ian Subject: Re: [AUS-SAGEN] Archival Photo Albums. Hi Ian, please print out your photos. I've used Albox for decades and find it invaluable for keeping old letters, newspaper clippings, diaries, photos etc. of my ancestors. I have one for each of my pairs of ancestors, e.g. one each for parents, one for paternal grandparents, one for maternal grandparents going back as far as 3 x great grandparents on both sides. Albox is acid free and I know that my precious records are going to be safe for the next 500 years. All these records in their Alboxes are kept in a trunk, so that my daughter who hates clutter, will not put it in a skip when I die! I hate it when I read that Granny's everything has been thrown on a bonfire or into a skip. So may wonderful memories are then lost, never to be known about by her descendants. Please buy Alboxes and keep them in business. It's much too good a product to lose. Hi Judy I have been scanning photos for the local History Society and as we go I have been cleaning them and moving them to archival albums. (There was a fire on the outside wall of the history room - lucky only smoke damage) I got albums and insert pages from Archival Survival http://www.archivalsurvival.com.au/ They have a wide range of products available and a catalogue online at www.archivalsurvival.com.au/downloads/as_catalogue.pdf There is also a personal collection kit to get you started http://www.archivalsurvival.com.au/downloads/as_personal_collections_kits.pd f Their mail order service is excellent and you can order many different sizes of pocket sizes to fit your photos. Hi Judy I have bought a fair few Albox archival photo albums to store my 6 x 4 photos before I bought a digital camera. Now I only store my photos on the computer and don't print them. The Albox albums are good as they have loose plastic sleeves which store four of the 6 x 4 photos on each side and have a provision for a captions. You slide the photos into pockets and the captions slide in also (after you have written on them). I used to buy these albums in Brisbane but now the shop that sold them has closed down and there does not seem to be anywhere I can buy them locally. I did not really want to buy another album but just some of the loose sleeves to put in (like you) old photos my parents had. The last album I bought still has a few vacant sleeves left in it but I may need to buy some more. However the old photos are of different (smaller) sizes and would be too small to put into the 6 x 4 pockets as they would move all over the place. I solved the problem by cutting out pieces of 6 x 4 copy paper (I used 90 gsm) and fastening the photos to them using photo corners and then sliding those into the pockets in the album. I type up a caption in a spreadsheet in the computer and cut them out with scissors but the albums used to come with a provision for captions also. Found the Albox company on the net and they are in Hindmarsh in SA as luck would have it. I shall forward to you off-list the email they sent me. Hi List, I have been very fortunate to be given old photos of the family trees in my husband's family/ families and they have been stored in a cardboard boxes for years before I was given them. I would really prefer to be able to purchase archival photo albums to display them in. I live in S A and was wondering if any Lister/ Listers could please advise me where I can purchase a few of these albums, I guess it the city or suburbs of S A ? Judy.

Hi Albox products are great, although my understanding was from visiting their offices, was that they were on North Terrace, Stepney, rather than Hindmarsh. However, the problem is that I learnt about a month ago that they were in the hands of the Receivers. Hopefully they will be revived, but in the meantime, buy their products if you can find then, Andrew Peake On 18 July 2016 at 09:22, Ros Saunders via <aus-sagen@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Judy > > Also in Scrapbooking stores you will find plenty who have archival safe > photo albums Judy. > Ros > > On Mon, Jul 18, 2016 at 4:06 PM, Jenny Cooper via <aus-sagen@rootsweb.com> > wrote: > > > Have you tried GOULD BOOKS at Mmodbury/Tea Tree GULLY for your special > > photo folders? Thanks Steph for your prompt replies and all the info. I am pretty sure that the Yorkshire family is not the family I am looking for as in the 1881 census Jane is a widow at Muttons Row, Liskeard in Cornwall with children born in Linkinhorne (where Jane and Joseph were married) - there are a couple of Joseph deaths but not positive about which. In 1861 the family are in Linkinhorne - Joseph, Jane, Mary and William. In 1871 they are in Cornwall at Pensilva - Jos, Jane, Mary, John, Thos, Jos and Emma but not William - he is a servant aged 12 on a farm at Linkinhorne. The next time I can find William is marrying in Victoria in 1883 to Florence Godsen. Appreciate the time and effort you took to look Regards Robyn
So, this one, 1881, I think rules out one of those 1871 census reports. I believe him to be born c 1860 in Cornwall (?Linkinhorne) as his parents were married there in 1856. I am having no end of trouble with ancestry but I discovered on FMP the following information and wondered if someone had access to the Shipping List for this ship and could tell me if it states where he was living at the time of his departure. Greatly appreciate any info.
