    3. Hi Liz, Confirming what Robbie has posted, the 1903 SA Postal Directory has for Pt Pirie, George, Richard G., William & Stanley SYMONDS (Symonds Bros.). There is an entry above those just mentioned which is a bit hard to decipher but may mean Jno. H. Laury, Manager, Symonds Bros. Store and undertakers. There is a separate entry for S SYMONDS, cabinet maker of Solomontown. (Solomontown more or less same place as Pt Pirie). In the 1924 Sands Directory:- R.G. SYMONDS is mentioned as one of the Resident Justices of Pt Pirie. He is a JP and Storekeeper. He is further mentioned SYMONDS R.G., J.P (Symonds Bros.) Pt Pirie. Stan SYMONDS is a cabinet maker, Pt Pirie Mrs Symonds, bdghskpr (boarding house keeper?) Pt Pirie Geo Symonds, farmer at Wudinna SA W Symonds, salesman, "Hessle", Hargrave St., Semaphore ( the only W Symonds mentioned). Symond Bros. storekeepers is still mentioned in Pt Pirie in the Business Directory section. 3. Greetings Listers From the amount of bickering in the last few days, people have time on their hands. (And hey, it's a democracy. We should bicker occasionally to prove that.) SO PLEASE can some quiet / under- extended person volunteer to try to find a small part of an answer to this puzzle? My missing Aus lad has proved impossible for years, and it's such a common name that I guess many see it as not worth even attempting. Details: Winifred Callaghan, 14-year-old Irish Famine orphan, was shipped to Australia on the Maria in 1850. (End of the Earl Grey scheme.) She married (Cornishman) Master Mariner Richard Plummer Burgess, who drowned off New Zealand in 1863. I’m missing two of Win’s children, last seen in a NZ orphanage. William Henry Burgess, b 1858, and Thomas Alfred Burgess, b 1862, "went back to Australia and Ireland” (but which did which?) family legend says. The next generation, born about 1890 – 1920, should have family names Richard, Winifred, possibly Gertrude, and the usual Mary- Thomas-William-Henrys. I have partly traced many of the possible people in the on-line NSW BDMs, and hunted the cemeteries lists, but their names are too ordinary to let me make progress. I descend from Win and Richard's oldest son, Richard Henry, who stayed in NZ. A younger daughter Elizabeth married John Hiles in NSW, and I've traced her family. Many thanks for any ideas on where I can find either of my missing lads. (Yes, they fail to show in the Ireland 1901 and 1911 Censuses . . . . ) Please contact me at migseder@clear.net.nz - Migs Eder, Christchurch, New Zealand. Four times I have tried to send the following to the list. Each time it has been knocked by by Mail-Dameon ?? here it is. please post it on the list for me: aus-sagen@rootsweb.com Migrant Records of the 1836 Ship Africaine Greetings all. Am very pleased to say - the following are TWO very important developments regarding the sharing of historical items relating to South Australia: 1. I have just received the following email from someone who seems to be the only one who can say yes or no. In our recent telephone conversation, I made a commitment to you to find a resolution regarding the granting of permission for you to publish records relating to the Africaine. I consider records of this nature are definitely in the public's best interest to be widely available and therefore if permission is still necessary, then consider it granted. I have spent some time viewing your website and found it incredibly interesting. I wish you well in your future endeavours. ======================== 2. I have just spent a week at the State Records at Gepps Cross, researching shipping documents which are not available at SLSA. I thought that SLSA had photocopies of them all. It appears not. I am reminded of the saying "do not presume". I believe you will all want to know that my newest CD has been delayed because of all this extra information [nearly 400 extra names not previously recorded]. I am sure you would rather have it all at the one time, rather than wait for any addendums to be provided at some other time. Whilst there I mentioned that the Victorian State Library have microfilm readers that are attached to computers which enable us researchers to save documents onto our memory sticks, instead of having to pay [often large amounts] to photocopy same. This Tuesday I went the the State Records Office in Leigh Street, to continue this research. To my delight, I was advised that one machine at Leigh Street is now available to save documents onto our memory sticks. This decision has just happened. I've said my thanks to the wo/man up stairs [you know - that someone who looks after us all]. ================== These two developments will make an immence difference to us researchers. It may be that I have made a difference. However I believe that I have just contributed to a decision that was almost ready to be made. I am smiling. Are you ? I am happy. Are you ? I understand that some may think the above might be off topic. If so, may I suggest you think again - or get your heads read. My latest cat scan shows that my brain looks just as it should, and the cancer cells in my lungs are definitely shrinking. If Bob May happens to be reading this - please email me. I have found some interesting info regarding the Everards. If anyone else on the list is interested, I am happy to share this information. Remember - a smile uses a whole lot less muscles than a frown and those two words THANK YOU can mean a whole lot to anyone who is doing the best they can, in this difficult world. Keep smiling and cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm

    1. [AUS-SAGEN] Doing the right thing
    2. Doing the right thing. For those not interested in this topic, please move on to the next query/response on this list. Before I begin I would like to say that the following is not meant as criticism. Rather, it is an effort to change a negative into a positive. Recently we have seen the following comments: * I am writing to express my disappointment about how this List is being run the last few months. Sure not like it used to be! I GUESS WE HAVE TO ACCEPT THAT LIFE DOES GET IN THE WAY FOR MANY OF US. SOME CONTRIBUTORS HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH "OTHER THINGS" SUCH AS FAMILY ISSUES, OR HEALTH OR ARE JUST "TAKING A DEEP BREATH" BEFORE GETTING BACK TO "WORK" - YES IT IS WORK, AND WE DO IT BECAUSE "WE WANT TO HELP". * I really can see down the track if not sooner this List is 'going down the gurgler' which is a shame, there is always a few that have to spoil it for others on this List and in Life in general. THIS LIST IS WHAT YOU AND I MAKE OF IT. SOME GRUMBLE AND PROCRASTINATE. THIS IS NOT A REASONABLE WAY TO BEHAVE - REMEMBER THAT WE ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS. IF WE HELP EACH OTHER, THE LIST WILL SURVIVE. OF COURSE WE KNOW THAT WHATEVER HAPPENED LAST WEEK MAY BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO WHAT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEK. CHANGE can be hard, or OK - depending on how we all deal with it. * sometimes I even hesitate to put anything to the list for fear of someone saying something/anything.... STEAK CAN BE OVERDONE. AN OCCASIONAL BIT OF LIGHT RELIEF OFTEN HELPS US WEARY LISTERS CRACK A SMILE AS WE CARRY ON 'TRYING TO HELP'. * A number of our Listers spend a lot of their spare time and effort to help and then there are others that send the Info without even letting the list know that they have attended to the query. Which to me doesn't seem to be RIGHT WAY at ALL. But they are allowed to get away with it by the List Owner. HMMM - "THE RIGHT WAY" AND "GETTING AWAY WITH IT" - these phrases are so open to interpretation. The former - please indicate you are prepared to respond to the query, then let us know briefly how you have responded. The latter - I dont really want to know why some people think others are "Getting Away with it". Getting away with what. It's all a matter of interpretation. Maybe you speak French. I dont. Maybe I speak Cornish. Maybe you dont. It seems to me that maybe the problem is that some people forget that we live in Australia. We are allowed Freedom of Speech here. We are allowed the freedom to think and say what we think. All we need to remember is to be kind and generous, and accept that people can be different and still live well together. * our List Fuhrer I AM ACTUALLY OFFENDED BY THIS STATEMENT. LIST ADMINISTRATORS HAVE PROVIDED US WITH A WONDERFUL FACILITY - TO FIND, TO LEARN, AND TO SHARE. REALLY - WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT. CAN YOU DO BETTER ? ARE YOU PREPARED TO GIVE THE TIME AND EFFORT TO PRODUCE AN INTERESTING CHALLENGING FACILITY SUCH AS THIS ?? AN OFTEN REPEATED MAXIM - IF YOU CANNOT SAY SOMETHING NICE, THEN DONT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. We cannot expect the list administrators to play watchdog all the time. Knowing they [Julie and Ros] are away is no reason for a lack of courtesy. Sooo - please - ask nicely [a bit of detail helps]. Do not expect an answer immediately. Allow us some time to ourselves - and we will reply to you, just accept that it might not be immediately. Please be courteous and stay friendly. Friends are the salt of the earth. Without salt, life can be bland. Ask nicely, reply clearly, remember to say Thank You. AND SMILE. Oh dear - have I said too much - again ?? Amazing isnt it.. I have only answered one person since the last blow up and still I get abused by people who cant even continue the open discussion we were all having about the subject without personally attacking those who help Its because of the personal attacks way back,(probably before Steph and Mikes time) that stops me AND MANY OTHERS from wanting to contribute directly to the list.
