Can someone please lookup births of children of Fitzwilliam EVANS & Jane Augusta PACKARD born c1850's & 1860's Thankyou Helen
Hi Maryanne, You have the correct Frank Collie and yes we have been in contact previously. I am trying to clarify discrepancies in the number of children recorded in Frank's death certificate (6) and the birth registration entries. I have found in The Advertiser a birth notice for a still-born girl which takes the tally to 4 (but there does not seem to be a birth registration). I have also found in The Advertiser a newspaper article about the drowning of John Collie Frank's eldest son, in the Torrens in March 1939. Hi All I would like to know whether there was a local newspaper in circulation in Salisbury in 1872. I notice from the South Australian Library website there are a several Salisbury (and surrounds) newspapers but I do not what years they relate to. In particular I am looking for an article on the annual sports events held in Salisbury on 20 September 1872 and the running of Albert Edward Bird. There was a small article in South Australian Advertiser. Any assistance would greatly appreciated. regards John Bird

Early Experiences of Life in South Australia: And an Extended Colonial History 1878 [reprinted 1884] by John Wrathall Bull go to http://www.archive.org/details/earlyexperience01bullgoog and select Full Text (1.0 M) My Question - J.W. Bull refers to Mr. B. G Any idea who Mr. B. G might be ?? First, Mr. B. G arrived from India with his family and a large retinue of Indian servants. He left the greater part of his capital to be realised on and to follow him. He purchased improved sections and a house near Adelaide and joined the Author [J W BULL] , as before mentioned, as partner in a business to introduce stock, in the year 1839. Several herds of cattle passed through their hands with good profit, a cattle station was formed on Bull's Creek, on which overland cattle were fattened, and the city of Adelaide supplied with beef, and settlers with stock ; several flocks of sheep also were received, chiefly from Tasmania ; these were disposed of (store sheep) at an average price of 38s. a head Mr. B. G was anxious to begin a breeding sheep station, but the Author on the fact of the price of store-sheep in the older colonies being so low (3s. to 5s. a head) declined to join in the purchase of sheep at the price then ruling in this colony, and left his partner to invest on his own private account. So two flocks were transferred to Mr. B. G at 38s. a head ; before the end of two years the crisis in this colony occurred, and the sheep with their increase were sold by the Government auctioneer, the late Bentham Neales, Esq., and realised 5s. a head only. According to the records I have, the only ship to come to SA in 1839 from India [Calcutta] was the Prince George The Sydney Herald reported on Monday September 30th 1839: The PRINCE GEORGE left Calcutta with thirty passengers, chiefly persons desirous of recruiting health in the salubrious climate of Australia after a lengthened residence in India. please rsvp Cheers from Di Cummings of Melbourne http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/fh/passengerlists/BoundforSouthAustralia.htm

Hi Folks, I'm hoping someone can help me ... I'm trying to confirm the date that the Peter's Ice Cream factory at Windsor Gardens was burnt down. I saw the fire on my way home one night - my interest? My Dad used to be production manager there in the 1950s and 60s and my brother and I literally grew up in the factory! The closest I can pin it down is 1979 AD [after divorce] and 1983 BC [before moving to Campbelltown]! It was one of a series of fires around Windsor Gardens / Holden Hill at the time - possibly 5 large fires set by a firebug. Any help appreciated - unfortunately it's a tad recent for TROVE / NLA newspapers. Regards ......... Susie Zada, Ocean Grove, Victoria

Hi Cathy I just saw your query about John HARE. I compiled police info from files held at State Records of SA (originals at SA Police Historical Society) and the database can be searched at http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/police.html John Hare appears in GRG5/14: "Agreements signed by men entering service with date of appointment, dismissal, resignation, etc 1838-52" GRG5/23: "Register of ex-members of the SA Police Force 1838-1920". (This was compiled about 1921.) His dismissal is also noted in the 1848 Government Gazette. The only info recorded: Born 1822. He joined Police 1-7-1848 aged 26 years and was dismissed 17-10-1848. The info for many of the early police is quite sparse. Bye Maureen M Leadbeater Adelaide Co-operative History http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/
Hi Listers Several years ago from records published in the SA Government Gazettes, I compiled a database of those who purchased land under the credit selection scheme 1869-1890. http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/landselectors.html. I have now added further information. Some selectors failed to fulfil the required conditions or failed to pay amounts due. After a warning notice in the Government Gazette, a number of these selectors had their agreement forfeited or revoked. Other selectors applied to transfer their selection to another farmer giving reasons such as old age, personal hardship, ill health, accident or insolvency. Upon the death of a selector, the administrator of an estate would apply for a transfer. When changes were made to the conditions, many selectors applied for a new agreement. This allowed a longer time to pay. The substituted residence clause permitted a selector to apply to place his son, son-in-law, male relative or man servant on his land. While the searchable database of more than 17,500 purchases by credit selection covers the period 1869-90, the additional information is only to 1875 so far. It includes dates when agreements were revoked or forfeited and when new agreements were approved. The reason for transfers is noted and names of the new selectors have been added to the database. Those interested in the Credit Selection scheme may wish to read my article http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/land.html Bye Maureen M Leadbeater Adelaide Co-operative History http://www.ach.familyhistorysa.info/

Hi, Could the answer re Pensions please be posted to the List, please? Mary Anne, Myrtleford, Vic. Also I have been told that the State Records Office of SA also has "District registers of pension claims" from 1909-ca - 1960 that were maintained at local courts on behalf of the Commonwealth Government. Does anybody know which Local Court would be involved in recording Invalid Pension details for a person residing in Glenelg South Australia in 1929?
Dear Listers, Would anybody in Adelaide, who is soon visiting the State Records Office of South Australia, be able to obtain a copy of a record for me, please? Dear List Would anyone know if there were early baptism records kept by SA churches, which are still in existence, or were transcribed and put onto any indexes? I found my GG grandmother's birth on the Victorian Pioneer Indexes was actually an image copy of a baptism record, and not a registration page. Kind regards, Rowena In Melbourne
