Can someone please lookup the births of children of James Simon BENTLEY & Violet Clarendon MICHELL after 1910 Also the deaths of James Simon BENTLEY and his wife Violet Clarendon BENTLEY Thankyou Helen
I am interested in Edgar John Burgess who died during the first world war in France in 1916. He came from Jamestown SA. I wondered if some members of the list perhaps know people (and could bring me in contact with them) who are related to him and his younger brother who also served in France in the same period. My interest in him is caused by the fact that I'm visiting his grave regularly. I guide people around the battlefields of the Somme in France where the boy is buried and came across a picture, taken in the winter of 1916-1917, of his grave. After investigating a bit I found the military whereabouts of him and his brother on the website of the Australian Infantery Force. It would be great if I could find some more information about them. My hope is of course that one of your geneology-records contain some information about him and his brother and about some of their still living relatives. The name of the boy who died in France: Edgar John Burgess, 21 when he enlisted in february 1916, 22 when he died in november 1916. So he had to be born in 1894. His younger brother: Lloyd Hayes Burgess, 20 when he enlisted on the same day as his brother (born in 1895). He returned to Australia in november 1919 and was discharged in 1920. In june 1931 he wrote a letter to the military authorities so was still alive at that time. It could be he died around december 1959 because at that moment the Central Army Records Office was asked for his records. Their father was: Thomas George Burgess, their mother was called Margaret. They all came from Jamestown, South Australia. I would be more than grateful if someone could help me a bit further with my investigation. Kindest regards, Fred van Groningen, Netherlands.
Hi all, Thanks to Heather, Barry and Mary Anne for the information they have uncovered. In answer to Heather's query I am not sure as yet whether the Charles Thoroughgood I am now researching was a member of the police force. From his marriage information he was Charles John Thoroughgood son of John Thoroughgood. In reference to the Trove newspaper reports regarding the stolen child. I have just been searching Trove for details. From what I can tell the child may have not been found. Is this so. It is such a tragedy. I hope to find more on this family. Best wishes Dawn North East Victoria
Hi Dawn There are no births for this couple on The CD of Birth 1907-1928. >From the SAGHS site both are mentioned in the cemetery index. Try <www.saghs.org.au> You can get information from them but it will cost. Mary Anne, Myrtleford, Vic. p.s. Dear List I have a conundrum, and would like to ask for help. The previous message under Webb-Shugg was not a marriage, but a birth registration, and it helped to solve a mystery and opened up more questions. Stephen Webb was born 19 Feb 1856, Adelaide, to parents John Webb and Eliza Shugg. I have a Stephen Shugg who married Elizabeth Gravil in 1880, giving his age as 22, father Richard Shugg. His death in Sydney, age 66, in 1922, also records his father as Richard Shugg. Both ages indicate a birth year of 1856, so that ties up nicely with Stephen Webb's birth year. No Webb-Shugg marriage in the UK or Australia. Stephen Shugg is a very unusual name across the Shugg's of the 1800's. There were only 2 in Australia. So, this looks to me like he was an illegitimate child, who was raised in a family where he was told that his father was a Richard Shugg, or was indeed raised in a household where the grandfather was a Richard Shugg, and he grew up believing that his grandparents were his parents. It would seem obvious that the Eliza Shugg, (parents James and Elizabeth Shugg from Helston) who later married James Dibell in 1871 was his mother. Yet, I'm not 100% convinced. Richard is also not a well used name amongst the Shugg's. In Eliza's family, the only Richard is an older brother who marries and moves interstate to Victoria by Feb 1855. In fact Richard does not occur in her Shugg family at all. There is another Shugg family group in Adelaide at the time (unrelated to Eliza's parents by 200 years), headed by Richard Freeman Shugg. They are a stable family unit and remain in Adelaide. Stephen grew up in South Australia and married and had his children there, before moving to Sydney. Richard Freeman Shugg's daughter Elizabeth wasn't born until 1851, but he has a niece Elizabeth Vining who travelled to Adelaide with them, and in 1858, marries his son. I'm wondering how possible it is that there was a fabricated changed of her name when registering the child. Most likely Stephen believes his father is a Richard Shugg, because that is what he has been told. So, I'm looking for any supporting evidence such as a Census to put the picture together. As you can see, I'm trying to think my way through this one. Apologies for the long story. Are there any other records like Census or election records, that could be checked, to find who Stephen is living with between the years 1856 and 1878, when he married? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Cheers Rowena

Dear List I have a South Australian marriage for Eliza SHUGG and James WEBB, on 19 Feb 1856, in Adelaide. I have some confusion with this one, determining just who Eliza was. This couple don't appear to have had children or die in South Australia. Could someone check this marriage to see if any ages were given, and also check for deaths for Stephen and Eliza Webb? Thank you for your help, Regards, Rowena
Hi Lyn and listers, The fields which must be filled in are: Father's 1st given name and surname, Mother's 1st given name only, Select Birth/Christening event, Select region, for example British Isles If the names are common and you need to narrow down the number of results, fill in the year and year range. If you still have too many results you can fill in the country and county. If you don't know these you need to search for their marriage 1st. If they moved around the country you will probably miss some of their children. Do NOT enter the mother's maiden surname because if it is not recorded you will not get any results. Leave the *First Name, *Last Name, Spouse and spouse Last Name fields blank. Hope this helps. HI Margaret, My husband's O'Neill's were from Rosroe near Sixmilebridge in County Clare. They came to South Australia in 1852. Unfortunately we cannot hardly find any trace of John O'Neill born 1814 or his wife Bridget Nee McNamara. We do know their son Patrick O'Neill settled in and around Sevenhills' in Clare SA and married Annie Doherty. We also find Annie O'Neill in the Destitute Asylum in Adelaide but the other children Thomas and John seem to have disapeared as well. I thought I would say hello to a fellow Sixmilebridge researcher Cheers Gay PS also saw your posting on the Brooklyn NY site -----Original Message----- From: aus-sagen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-sagen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Margaret Spearin Sent: Monday, 27 September 2010 11:32 PM To: aus-sagen@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Manning in Sth Australia > Hi list > I and am looking for information about James Manning b ab 1839 in Six Mile > Bridge County Clare Ireland.
