    1. Re: [AUS-SAGEN] DNA Testing
    2. Dear John an Gale Strangely enough I have just applied to 23andMe for a kit to be sent.  My son in America and his partner have just taken their test and sent me the link.  I've had a good look at it this morning and am amazed at how much more information is available now than there was about 15 years ago, when I took the MtDNA test with Oxford Ancestors.  The cost of the test is $99 and the shipping which includes customs etc. is about $76.  It's certainly cheaper than the $150 I paid all those years ago for less information.  23andMe also have the ability to cross-reference your results with others who have taken their test, therefore Gale, you might just find your missing relatives, and you'll certainly find your ethnic roots.  If you download their information you can see video clips and lots of information about what they offer. Best wishes Merilyn Pedrick  ----- Original Message ----- From:"Gale Gronow" To:"John Keynes" , "SouthAus Mailing List" Cc: Sent:Sun, 9 Jun 2013 12:53:14 +1000 Subject:Re: [AUS-SAGEN] DNA Testing Hi John, This has interested me for some time. 3. I did a free DNA test with SMGF  http://www.smgf.org/ some years ago for genealogy research for matches and access by the provider, the problem was that they sold the rights to a genealogy company who tried to charge a fee to access the results and matches, something that was suppose to be free to the providers of the test. Then that stopped and was passed on to another genealogy company, so that appears to be lost forever now.   Cheers Don From the Hawkesbury below the Blue Mountains outside Sydney NSW. >________________________________ > From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Sent: Sunday, 9 June 2013 5:00 PM >Subject: AUS-SAGEN Digest, Vol 8, Issue 128 > > >----- Forwarded Message ----- > > >Today's Topics: > >  1. 3. Hi Marg, The B-Index is the Biographical Index of South Australians (BISA) published by the SA Genealogy & Heraldry Soc in book form and also available on CD. The numbers in the ShipsList refer to the page and volume of the index. BISA is not available online but can be purchased on CD or viewed in major libraries. 3. Hi Anne, Try this: http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper Click on the map of SA. In the search box make sure you click SA newspapers only. Search for Harwich 1858 and it will bring up a list of passenger arrivals. Just a warning though, it's a pain to read through. These steamboat lists were in pretty good shape ... some names attracted me and I found them mentioned on Ancestry with no real idea of emigration year.  They will be surprised if they google the names in a few days.  The CHAMBLY crew list was pretty tame compared to some.  The margin notes .. such as "discharged for stealing sugar, August 14th" or even "discharged 1st October for being uppity"  <smile> Please share this *new* for TheShipsList website email, with any other list to which you belong if you think it might be of interest or value to those list members (in other words, on-topic). Try the Catholic Church records at the Gen Soc. I have found Catholic family there who only baptised, not registered births, so you may be able to find other Costello members. Not only the immediate family are detailed but two Sponsors for each baptism. Anne Sent from my iPad
