Hi everyone I am trying to trace my gggrandfather John Clarke who was born in Ireland in 1812 and arrived in South Aust in 1836 on the Tam O Shanta he married Catherine Taggart in Adelaide 1840 they had 14 children John was a grazier and lived in the Yankalilla districts until his death in 1896 I would be particually interested to know what area of Ireland he come from, so I can continue my search there, but any information would be greatly appreciated. Also my Gggrandfather William Ahern who was born in Ireland in c1829 he arrived in S.A.approx 1855 with his brother John born c1827 William married Mary Commerford (spelt several different ways eg one M) William was a farm labourer they also settled in the Yankalilla area where they lived until their deaths. Once again any information would be great. Thank You Chris

Thankyou to all who replied I now have her death 1927 in Vic Judy
I am getting confused by all this. First I though yes this is it but then what is it with the dates of the inquest? When you work out the ages on his war records and his marriage he would have been born 1895 and 31 in this Sydney was 36 and certainly not same parents. It doesn't look like his parents came to Australia as they were in England when he was in the army So much as I want it to be him I don't think it is Good work though Helen has a younger brother who is away at the moment. I think I will send her of what I have and see what she says. Maybe she can quiz, Lornas family, she also said maybe her step brother des might know something. Hi Anne I have been checking through the service record of Sydney William Brown (as suggested by Rhonda)and there is a letter saying that he died in Melbourne aged abt 40 - I think it is written by a Lorna Brant (formerly Brown) living in Oodnadatta - she talks about her father. There is a certified extract of a marriage certificate also. Hence I am not sure that the newspaper report is accurate. Robyn
Hi Anne What a mystery and I am happy to try to help you unravel it. I have found a Helen Elizabeth Jones in the 1911 census aged 13 working as a nursemaid to two young grandchildren. Makes birth year abt 1898 which could fit. Also a marriage. But given the marriage below I wonder if she may have been Ellen. I have no idea when he was born or where they married, also when he was born, I cant find either, but he wasn't born in 1909 as he would only be 11 when first child was born married. Yes all the children were born in South Australia Pauline ruby 14.5.1920 Alberton Lorna may 26.6.1922 Birkenhead Harrold Kenneth 25.4.1924 Prospect Helen Amy 3.9.1925 Medindie Helens certificate says he worked for tramways Mother married again in 1931 to George Henry Herraman, she was 31 and a widow, he was 27. I figure Sydney Brown was about the same age as his wife which would make him born around 1900 Robyn found this so I guess maybe following that up may help. This one in Vic Digger - Death Index. Does anyone know how to access shipping records we would be looking for them around 1916-1920? I don't know Helen personally, she cant talk on phone so doing this by snail mail. Hi All, I am new to this list and am looking for some help on a family puzzle I have come across. I am thinking of buying a marriage record from South Australia for 1869 can any one tell me will it give me both the Father and Mothers name as it appears that my Warrens changed their name to Renney for whatever reason and the marriage I am looking for is that of a Sarah Alice Warren Renney (This is not the first time I have come across a child being named with second name Warren and surname Renney)and took place at the home of a Mrs E Renney and I am trying to find out if this Mrs E Renney was an Eliza Renney. Hoping someone can help me solve this problem Regards Margaret
