Hi Sheelagh Here (Bendigo, Victoria) these awards are always granted on the Queens Birthday. The following day there is a write up in newspapers of who has received an award and why. I've no idea whether that would have happened during war time, but it might be worth a try. Good luck! Hello Tim Will just tell you how I solved a couple of brickwalls My ancestor was believed to have been buried in SA. There were many family trees etc saying he def died in SA. Low and behold I believed he had died in Vic. I couldnt resist getting the death cert and sure enough instead of Wood he was listed as Woods. There was information missing from the cert but I could confirm it was him and I also had a brickwall with a GG Grandmother. Finally a cousin found out she had another surname. On her death cert it said she married in Albury but we couldnt find a marriage. Kate
Hoping there is someone with connections to St Peters College who can get a photo of the Boer War Memorial for me My grandfather Alleyne Charles Carter is one named on it who served in the Boer War Judy
Hi Team & Richard I note that a Priscilla BLACK from Port Lincoln married Alfred Edward RANKIN 6 June 1889. If this is the same Priscilla, mother of Lilly Marion KINGSTON, she got married 6 months after the birth of Lilly. I believe it's the same Priscilla as I cannot find another one in any other SA records. Priscilla had 10 children with Alfred Edward RANKIN. Although married 6 June 1889 her first child by that marriage arrived 17 June 1891, a full 2 years later. Priscilla's second child by that marriage arrived 20 July 1895 another 4 years later. Her subsequent 8 children arrived reasonably regularly spaced in time. Thus she had an abnormal timing for her first two RANKIN children. This of course could be for many reasons but knowing her history maybe there is a story there of another child by CC KINGSTON. Priscilla had moved to Petersburg, SA with her family for the birth of her 4th RANKIN child and had all her remaining children there. Priscilla died in 1926 in Adelaide and is buried in West Terrace Cemetery with Alfred Edward RANKIN her husband. A fine headstone shows the grave. I also note that Trove Newspapers has a court case reported where Priscilla BLACK accused a ship's Captain of assaulting her on 19 Sept 1886 on a trip from Port Lincoln to Adelaide. CC Kingston appeared for Priscilla in the case. I can only speculate on the fate of Lilly Marion KINGSTON but if not put up for adoption immediately I would think Lilly should have been absorbed into the RANKIN family but I see no evidence of that. I have checked all other birth records for the 8 Dec 1888 to see if a subsequent name has been registered but nothing correlates. I mention one other record: Digger - South Australian Births 1842-1906 (c) SAGHS Surname: KINGSTON Given Names: Dorothy Le Fevre Date: 1895-04-03 Sex: F Father: (not recorded) Mother: (not recorded) Birth Place/Residence: North Adelaide District Code: Ade Symbol: IS Book: 561 Page: 444 Cross Reference: This is in a possible timeframe for a sister to Lilly though the mother could not be Priscilla as she gave birth 20 July 1895 to Myra Polly Lavinia RANKIN. The parents are not recorded for the above record. Symbol I & S show that the date given is Indefinite and that there is Supplementary information of an additional, unusual nature in the registration. I pose this record as a distant possibility of another birth to CC Kingston. I would be interested to have a copy of the birth certificate for Lilly for my records. Alfred Edward RANKIN is my great greatuncle. Hi Penne I Think you may need to do some maths!! Firstly if you read the initial email Maude Caroline was born in 1888 and married in 1915 in Queensland. Secondly the marriage you refer to is actually between MATILDA Hammond and John Lockett. These are the parents of Horace Kingston Lockett who I refer to in my post Cheers Judy -----Original Message----- From: Penne [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 17 August 2013 11:25 AM To: abhcon; 'Tim Wilkinson'; '[email protected]' Subject: Re: [AUS-SAGEN] Can you help break my crazy brickwall? Hi Tim, Just doing a quick search around the state department websites for historical bmd's. There is a possible death registration in New South Wales, in Auburn district, which is a suburb of Sydney. New South Wales has an odd system where they don't give the surname of parents on the database. It can make it hard to find people. You can order the certificate online, and it used to be sent out. I don't know if they have upgraded to being able to pay and then download it. Details below. Reg. No. 33539/1965 Savage, Maud, father's given name unknown, mother's given name Elizabeth, District Auburn. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/bdm_fh.html website above. In searching I've used Maud, Maude, Caroline and both Savage and Coates. I also checked New Zealand, and used both her surname and maiden name, but no results that matched there. Hi Tim, It is quite likely that if her husband had died first, and she was a widow, that she has moved to another state to live with one of her children. If so, then she would have been buried close to that location, where her son or daughter could visit. Do you know if any of her children were living in another state of Australia? Have you traced what happened to her daughters, who they married, and where they lived? Apologies, that I don't have any answers for you. Hi Tim, I have the exact same problem with my gggrandmother. She appeared to have left her husband and disappeared. I have come to accept that she must have died as an unknown, probably alcoholic. The fact that your lady was done for shoplifting suggests to me it might be a similar case. Good luck.
