The term was used to distinguish those who had a licence to run stock on Crown lands, from those who had other titles to the land such as freehold. I am researching a Port Phillip squatter and his cousin who had licences for areas in the south east, and that land was under Commissioner for Crown Lands, Charles Bonney. The licence fees for these runs, which were very large, were ususally paid on behalf of the licenceee by agents in Adeliade. In the case in which I have an interest Younghusband and Co paid the fees, usually about £50 a year of that many square miles. Kevin Brewer

Sent from my iPad Hi Everyone I have been following the travelling from one state to another and how they did it. My great grand father and mother travelled from Green Plains, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia where they were farmers. They then pack up and move to Madura, Western Australia we they were managers of the Madura Station and ran the station for Indian Army Horses. When they came back to South Australia they came to an area call Scales Bay by bullock and wagon, there were the parents and 13 children, the wheel dropped of the wagon and they settled there. It was approx 17 miles out from Streaky Bay It has been very hard finding out how they travelled to Madura. Cheers Sheelagh

Hello Coral, My great-grandparents also arrived in SA in 1851 on the 'Marion'. You may know that a 'reunion' of 'Marion descendants' was held at Edithburgh on Yorke Penunsula in 2001 which I attended and met many of the descendants. I have some information gleaned at the time. I would be interested in the g-grandparents' name. Do you have an interest in some of the data I hold of a general nature and perhaps that which might apply to your g-grandparents' name? Good Afternoon All, I have a similar curiosity too, my husbands' great grandparents arrived in SA on the good ship Marion - which was shipwrecked (that story is fascinating in itself), obviously picked themselves up dusted themselves off and turned up in Bendigo some time later. Just to add to the mix they 10 years later with young children went back to SA to Wallaroo. How did they go to Bendigo after their adventuresome (sic) arrival, and how did they return, no family records to tell me, its not urgent that I know but it is something to speculate - we would think nothing of making the journey now - but it sparks the curiosity in me how did they do it. Have a good day everyone, we have just returned from a glorious morning in Kangaroo Valley NSW to the local Celtic Gala, where we are upholding the Cornish Tradition of being at everything Celtic and leaving our mark :) Coral Jennings Southern Sons of Cornwall Member > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2013 12:59:13 +0930 > Subject: Re: [AUS-SAGEN] Overland travel to SA > > Can those who reply do so to the list, I am also interested > Thanks > Tracey > > > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of ian simon > Sent: Saturday, 24 August 2013 11:49 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Overland travel to SA > > Dear all > > We hear of many accounts of people in the 1800s travelling overland to Victoria and NSW but I do not recall many travelling the other way into SA. Hi All, I'm seeking help to find more on this twig on the family tree. Robert FINLAYSON born 1908 in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Herbert Ernest FINLAYSON and Bertha Adelaide Margaret VORLEY. Bertha's mother Margaret WOOD was born in Adelaide in 1846. Robert left London on 25th August 1923 (aged 15) on the SS Bendigo bound for Adelaide, South Australia. A year later he met with an accident resulting in a broken leg. >From The Register (Adelaide, SA : ) Tuesday 16 September 1924 FARM LAD INJURED. Robert Finlayson(16), a farm apprentice, who recently arrived from Scotland, was admitted to the Adelaide Hospital about 10.45 p.m. on Monday suffering from a fractured leg sustained in an accident. He was brought to Adelaide by the Murray Bridge police On board the SS Bendigo were a number of other youngsters unaccompanied by family and he may have been part of a scheme such as the Salvation Army ran where boys were sent to Canada and Australia as apprentices, particularly farmers. His brother brother aged only 14 went to Canada also in 1923 as part of such a scheme. In 1939 his sister lodged a petition to the Court of Session, Scotland, to fix the date of his death as he had not been heard from since August 1927 when he was employed by the Beltana Pastoral Company at Mt Lynhurst Station via Farina South Australia. Is anyone able to provide help or lookups or suggest where I might find information on: 1. Robert FINLAYSON's admission to the Adelaide Hospital about 15th September 1924. 2. Salvation Army employment schemes and any records which might survive from 1923. 3. Anyway of finding when he left his employment at Mt Lynhurst or whether there were any deaths of young men who weren't identified around that time. Robert FINLAYSON had numerous relatives in South Australia but I have not been able to find any evidence he was in contact with them. Thank you. Eileen .

Hi Sheelagh Is this your man? Taken from the Port Lincoln Times dated 10 Jan 1946 Mr. Robert Fleming, M.B.E., has long been identified with local government activities in the country. He has completed more than 40 years as clerk :and overseer of the Streaky Bay District Council, which is probably the largest local government area in the Commonwealth. He has been secretary of the Streaky Bay Hospital for 33 years, and president of the Streaky Bay Institute for many years. In addition, he has been secretary of the Vermin Board in that district.
