    3. I have just finished reading this marvellous piece of research byJanis Sheldrick. It has answered many questions I had from my family research as to why, when and how did members of a family move out and farmin the new colony. I have not been able to follow through ideas or theories for myself but this book detailing the work of George Goyder has definitely hellped to answer some questions. He was a remarkable man in what he did for the colony and has taken over a hundred years for it to be recognised. This is certainly a remarkabble reference book for seeking farming families in SA. 3. The two volumes are, 'A Listing of Insolvencies in South Australia 1841 to June 1828', by Frank W Hall, 2009. They can be purchased direct from Frank Hall [email protected] and possibly Gould Genealogy. This publication obviously covers bankruptcies, as distinct from companies that went bankrupt or became defunct. Records found them immigrating to Port Adelaide, Australia in 1860 (if correct ancestors) and had 8 children, with my direct descendant - Mary Jane in 1875 in S.A. Mary Jane married James Stafford (have marriage certificate confirming parents). Relations have told me Edward's parents were Thomas Bates and Emma Kirkby and Thomas'(born in Hull, Yorkshire in 1833) were William Bates and Mary Ann Maund but cannot find anything to tie them together. Can't find Thomas or Emma's birth or marriage records but have found death records in S.A. Only records found for Thomas are from the census in 1841 (8 year old) and 1861 as a A.B.seaman which stated he was married but no spouse name as onboard his ship that day). Have found birth notices for Caroline and Edward, both in Wales in 1838 & 1839 which makes Thomas only 5 years older????? with Edward's parent as John. Edward was a green grocer in Port MacDonald and Caroline a mid wife. Only death records I've found have them both listed in 1909 & 1910 in Minmi, NSW??????? Stuck as don't know if Thomas/Emma/William/Mary are any relation, the only thing is that I have a photo of Emma Kirkby taken in S.A and she'd be around 70/75 years old so confused......Any information would be gratefully accepted.

    2. RootsWeb Only
    3. According to the Dundee Courier of 4th December 1899: "Everard Bell left Algoa Bay, Cape Colony, to seek his fortune on 22nd July 1872, in a North German barque named the Königin Augusta, belonging to Stettin, Captain Pritzhorn, bound for the Mauritius. He landed in the Mauritius, and shortly afterwards sailed for Adelaide, South Australia, in the ship Tein Esser, and . . . . ." that's the last trace of him we have. Did Everard die en route, reach Adelaide, land there or sail onwards? - the schooner Tein Esser was recorded at Port Louis later in 1872, loading for Adelaide. Don Montague (whose mother was a Bell)
