    3. Hi Jocelyn, Have you tried TROVE Newspapers On Line at all? You never know there may be something on Trove Re Edward MANN??? Just an idea!! Kind regards, Judy. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jocelyn Gould Sent: Sunday, 16 March 2014 8:41 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] Edward Mann Greetings all Sincere thanks to all those kind people who are helping with my previous posting re my family names in SA. I am trying to break down a brick wall surrounding Edward Mann formerly of SA. I was recently amazed to discover in the Wills and Probates for England and Wales on Ancestry, that probate had been granted to someone in England for the estate of Edward Mann. To the best of my knowledge, Edward emigrated from Cornwall at the age of 21 in 1865 and lived in SA, all his life except for his final two years, 1912 - 1914, when he died in Melbourne. I am amazed that he had any estate in England at all as he had left there 49 years before. His known personal circumstances do not encourage me to believe he could have had anything at all in England to will - ie. been left anything in a Will there. The claimant of the estate (very meagre) does not appear to have been a family member nor does he appear to have ever been in Australia. How did he know of this death and that there was an estate to claim? Most curious. A search in Victoria for a Will or Probate indicates that he may have died intestate. As he was only resident in Vic for two years before he died, is it possible that he left a Will in SA and could Probate have been granted there? His marriage broke down in the 1880s and he would not have been in close contact with his five children who had scattered to WA, VIC, QLD and only one stayed in SA. Are there indexes to Land Titles available to the public in SA? I can find no records on-line. I believe he had a house and land transferred to him in Wallaroo in 1876 by his father-in-law, Benjamin Green of Moonta. He may have farmed at Emu Flats but I have no proof of that. 3. Following on from this email below to the List I have found since I sent it, that both William and Samuel ( Mt Gambier one ) HOLDING Were both born at Northamptonshire England so maybe related ? Also William's Father was John. Samuel married here in S.A. and his father was Samuel. Maybe their Father's were brothers, I may never ' crack' this one but worth a try. Kind regards, Judy. _____ From: Judy Holding [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, 5 March 2014 3:38 PM To: 'AUS-SAGEN' Subject: RE: Samuel HOLDING and His Wife Jane NEE BELL. Hi All, Wondering if there is a Lister that is connected to the Above Family at all? Years ago a man who has deceased since, and was Samuel Holding's descendant and I were in touch and met up. He was going to give the Family Tree of His Holding to me, but as he was in a suburb of Adelaide and I,myself living in country S.A. it never happened. He didn't trust Australia Post to post it to me by snail mail. He died before it transpired and I never had his family / children's address so guess all of the Info went by the way. Unfortunate, we had been trying till he got Ill, to work out if his Holding was related to my Husband's Holding, seemed as if they came from different parts of England , BUT the shires were very close to each other, so who knows ??. Samuel and Jane HOLDING lived at Mt Gambier my husband's Holding's in Pt Pass, Eudunda, Sliding Rock. S.A. Geranium Plains ( near Robertstown S.A.) and two sons of William and Emma HOLDING nee THOMPSON in about 1890 went overland to Swan Hill district in Victoria And had more children and died over there. They were , Samuel and John Holding both married two sisters the WARNER girls. Hoping I can find a Lister out there that may be connected to the Mt Gambier Holding's, I believe quite a few of that family of Samuel and Jane nee BELL went over to W.A. to live. Many thanks in advance, Kind regards, Judy.

    3. FWIW I must admit that I like WDYTYA and have bought all the DVDs so I can re-watch them. Though I found the US series a bit over the top but never-the-less interesting as my knowledge of US history is not as good as it should be. We see these 'celebrities' on the TV or big screen and quite often we know very little of them and I have found it enlightening to learn more of their lives. Okay some may not want to learn any more, but I find the study of humans a fascinating topic. I also enjoy learning of all the resources that the researchers use. I would agree the participants are handed it all on a silver platter, but none-the-less it has given me some hints as to where to look for those elusive relatives. I enjoy using Ancestry and Find my Past and I the British WDYTYA monthly magazine which has given me hours of reading - so I endure the Ancestry ads as I know they need to make money to be able to provide the services we enjoy.
