    3. Hello members of the AUS-ROMANI mailing list, currently hosted on Rootsweb/Ancestry servers. My name is Peter and I have been the list administrator of this list since it was abandoned. I have no idea when it was abandoned nor who the previous admin was. On 7th January 2020, Rootsweb informed all list admins that they will not be providing any mailing list services after 2nd March 2020, except to keep the archives available (see RW email appended below). In other words, all lists will cease to be. If members want to keep this list active, they will need to host it on a new server. A number of such servers exist, such as groups.io, FaceBook, google groups. I personally do not wish to remain the admin of this list, so one of the members will need to step up as a new administrator if they want to keep this list alive. As a side comment, I think that many of the smaller lists were created on a person's whim in Rootsweb's heyday, and are probably past reviving. I can't remember when the last post to this list was. If there are any questions, please post them to the list, but do it quickly as time is running out quickly. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails.  Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Hello subscribers to the aus-romani mailing list. All Rootsweb mailing lists have been nearly dead for the last two or so years. In February this year, Rootsweb upgraded the software that runs their 30,000 or so mailing lists, and after a few teething problems, the system is now up and running. The archives of past posts are gradually being restored, but this may take months. Subscribers may notice minor differences. The main difference for you is that you can register as a subscriber and then be able to adjust options for how you receive emails (e.g. single posts or digests in plain or MIME format, halt mail while on holidays and a few more things). Or you can just leave things as they are. As a reminder, this mailing list is for anyone with a genealogical interest in Romani (gypsies) in Australia. To post to this list or respond to a post, use the email address      aus-romani@rootsweb.com For questions about the operation of this list, please contact the list administrator at      aus-romani-owner@rootsweb.com Your list is back up, so if you want to keep it active and ongoing, please post your queries or information to the list. Otherwise you may lose it! Cheers Peter Lakeman Temporary List Admin

    3. Hello Peter, thank you for the heads up. I feel that the best way for me to find out more about my Romani ancestry would be to go to Europe and meet up with my relatives, however I don't think that is going to happen any time soon...On that note, I learnt that in Europe the term "Gypsies" is viewed as derogatory, and many Romani people don't identify with the term, but will say that they are not Gypsies, but that they are Romani. Of course, the origins of the term are innocent enough, but I think a lot of gadjes do use it in a negative way. A worse term is "Ziganer"...not sure if you have heard of that one, but it is very insulting. It means untouchables, and was the term that the Nazis preferred to call us during the porajmos ~ of which my relatives were victims of. I avoid using either term, however I have noticed that among the older generation of Romani people in Australia, the "G" word is accepted and used frequently. The younger generation that I know are slowing down on the terms usage, and preferring the name we call ourselves rather than the name that the gadjes gave us long ago. Still learning as I go, but I feel I have learnt so much. There is always plenty more to learn of course, which I am happy to continue to do. 3. Hello Shona, I'm sorry, but I still may not be of much help to you. This is what I do know though: During Australia's convict era a lot of Romani from the UK were unfairly sent to Australia as convicts. As for what tribe they are from, I'd say "King" might likely be from the Romanichal tribe. I'm not sure about what tribe, or tribes, occupy Scotland, I know that some Romanichal do, and I think some Kale (Welsh Romani), and there are also some Scotish Nomadic groups, as well as Irish ones as well, who probably don't have Romani ancestory. There are many tribes of Romani throughout Europe, the Middle East, and India. My tribe is in the Netherlands, they are known as the "Woonwagen bewoners" (Wagon livers, or People who live in wagons), they are of the Sinti tribe. My Oma and mother came to Australia in 1955. I hope you find what you are looking for! All the best! Corben. _________________________________________________________________ Time for change? 3. Hi David Oxley, I don't know about the Romani in Mildura, aparently there are a few there, but I don't know. I know that there was a group that was in Rockbank a while ago, but they were just travelling through, I don't know where they are now, I think they were Sinti. This is not the answer you's expect, but I've been trying to make a film on anything related to Romani in Australia, so am answering every AUS - ROMANI e-mail I receive. Interesting thing about herbs and their use. Also, about the weddings. 1. [AUS-ROMANI] Romani travelling near Toowoomba, also " Lovel"l Romani Name?
    2. jan rozanski
    3. Hello to everyone , I have 2 separate questions for people on the list Firstly, I am wondering if anyone has any ancestors who travelled in the Dalby/ Tara/ Toowoomba region in the late 1930's or 1940's or thereabouts? If so I am very keen to contact them. Secondly, if anyone has relations with surname Lovell, who lived at Meandarra around the 1940's? My grandmother was married to Jack Lovell, and I am told by a Romani person that Lovell is a Romani Name, so I am keen to contact anyone who may have any information which could help me. Thank you, jan Rozanski

    3. Dear Marcelle, This is just a brief response to your e-mail. I am a filmmaker interested in stories about interesting people. I'm particularly fascinated by Romani people and am 'collecting' stories about them. Sorry, I can not help you to find the truth about your ancestor(s) but I wish you the best luck in your efforts. And please, if you ever thought that your experience could be put down on paper or on the film tape, let me know. 3. Hello list My g grandparents had a child in 1900 named Nelly Romany Coles. She was born in Qld and died 3 months later in NSW. My g grandfather was listed as a 'Showman', a 'Theatrical Agent' and a 'Travelling Optician'. His name was Charles Coles and my g grandmother (his wife/partner don't know which) was listed as 'Madame Lee' and apparently told fortunes. I've been unable to trace their origins because of lots of 'porkies' and different names on my g grandmother's part, but am hoping someone out there can tell me where to look for show people who travelled throughout Australia including Tasmania and the Victorian goldfields around 1895 - 1908. Because their daughter was names Nelly ROMANY Coles I thought perhaps there was a gypsy element to all this. Hope someone has some clues! 1. [AUS-ROMANI] Memories of a Gypsy, by Victor Vishnevsky
    2. Sheila Salo
    3. Born in Shanghai in 1931, Victor Vishnevsky is a Russian Lovara Rom by culture, an Iranian by citizenship, and a resident of Brazil. In /Memories of a Gypsy/ he takes us from his childhood in Shanghai, through his family’s flight from China in 1949, through Burma, India, and Iran, and on to his emigration to Brazil and later world travels. Along the way he presents his views on his and other Gypsy cultures, and offers his opinions on history and world affairs. Addressed directly to the reader, Vishnevsky’s account is like a letter written to a friend. For more information, see http://mysite.verizon.net/resrrcxl/id1.html

    2. Corben Bigmore
    3. Dear Davor Dirlic, I wish you the best of luck with making the documentary and look forward in seeing it when it's made! My mother came to Australia from the Netherlands when she was 2 years old in 1955 with her family. We are from the Woonwagenbewoners (Roughly translated "Wagon living people") which is part of the Sinti tribe. My Oma (grandmother in Dutch) had gotten married to a Gjier (Non-Roma) so her children wouldn't have to go through the racism she went through, however the man she married wasn't the man she had hoped for, he was cruel to her and all her six children. Mum suffered a very cruel life, she lived in fear of her father and people treated her like scum, she got married to dad when she was 33 and had four children. Me and my brothers also have been treated poorly by some people because of being part Romani. Unfortunatly there isn't a lot of information on my family since some of my family won't talk much, what I know is that quite a few family members were murdered in Nazi concentration camps, also my great grandma was experonmented on by doctors after the war and died. My Oma wishes her identity to be made secret, she doesn't want anyone to know she is Romani, she has had a hard life. My mum might talk about about it, but she has to think about it first. Mum's eMail address is "lia_bigmore@hotmail.com" Please keep in contact with me, I'd love to help out in any way I can with this documentary! I have been making a Timeline on the whole history of the Romani people, it dates from before 400 AD. to our modern times. It is still being made, but it has quite a lot of information on it! If you wish to view this Timeline go onto "Writing.com" and look up under "My Authors" the name "nebroc" and view my portfolio, in there there are tow timlines called "The Timeline of Romani (Gypsy) History". Hear from you soon!
