Hello members of the AUS-RAN mailing list, currently hosted on Rootsweb/Ancestry servers. My name is Peter and I have been the list administrator of this list since it was abandoned. I have no idea when it was abandoned nor who the previous admin was. On 7th January 2020, Rootsweb informed all list admins that they will not be providing any mailing list services after 2nd March 2020, except to keep the archives available (see RW email appended below). In other words, all lists will cease to be. If members want to keep this list active, they will need to host it on a new server. A number of such servers exist, such as groups.io, FaceBook, google groups. I personally do not wish to remain the admin of this list, so one of the members will need to step up as a new administrator if they want to keep this list alive. As a side comment, I think that many of the smaller lists were created on a person's whim in Rootsweb's heyday, and are probably past reviving. I can't remember when the last post to this list was. If there are any questions, please post them to the list, but do it quickly as time is running out quickly. Cheers Peter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello subscribers to the aus-ran mailing list. All Rootsweb mailing lists have been nearly dead for the last two or so years. In February this year, Rootsweb upgraded the software that runs their 30,000 or so mailing lists, and after a few teething problems, the system is now up and running. The archives of past posts are gradually being restored, but this may take months. Subscribers may notice minor differences. The main difference for you is that you can register as a subscriber and then be able to adjust options for how you receive emails (e.g. single posts or digests in plain or MIME format, halt mail while on holidays and a few more things). Or you can just leave things as they are. As a reminder, this mailing list is for anyone with a genealogical interest in the Royal Australian Navy. To post to this list or respond to a post, use the email address aus-ran@rootsweb.com For questions about the operation of this list, please contact the list administrator at aus-ran-owner@rootsweb.com Your list is back up, so if you want to keep it active and ongoing, please post your queries or information to the list. Otherwise you may lose it! Cheers Peter Lakeman Temporary List Admin

Hello. Someone contacted me on this list a while back in regard to the photo of HMAS Orara on this website: http://users.bigpond.net.au/elliget/ausran/wecosh/wec04.html At the time, I was in England and didn't have access to the original, higher-res scans of these photos but I'm now back in Australia and will be able to access these next weekend when in Melbourne (currently in Brisbane). If the person is still subscribed, please contact me via this list. Regards, Martin Elliget
Thanks Martin I looked at the photo and yes my uncle Jack is in the photo. If you look at the left side he is sitting in front of the men standing, he is the 4th one along. Cheers Paul p.s could not post a message wiyh a photo attached. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Martin Elliget" <melliget@btinternet.com> To: <aus-ran@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 25, 2008 8:51 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-RAN] small ships > Hi Peter. > > Welcome. Paul. Sorry, I don't where I got Peter from (I guess you can be thankful I didn't say Mary). My apologies. I meant to add, I have higher res versions of those photos I scanned in, including that one of the Orara crew, but unfortunately currently on a pc in a storage box somewhere in Brisbane. I will hopefully be heading back to Australia mid-year, so will have access to them then. Hi Peter. Welcome. Nice to see mention of the Orara. I know little about her but a few years back I scanned an old album of wartime photos for a mate who's great uncle had been on HMAS Australia and amongst the photos was one of the crew of HMAS Orara. I quite liked it at the time because it seemed to capture the good spirits of the evening, with nearly everyone with smiles on their faces. I wonder if you can spot either of your uncles? To view it, go to page 4 of the following website: http://users.bigpond.net.au/elliget/ausran/wecosh/index.html Let me see if I can find anything on the Lismore. Btw, Rootsweb mailing lists pretty much only accept plain text emails and this list is limited to 40 KB in size, so your photos have not made it through. An alternative is to upload them to a site somewhere and post the link. Hi Geoff. The NAA have the RAN service record of Harold Thomas Mogg online. Title: MOGG HAROLD THOMAS : Service Number - 33757 : Date of birth - 31 Jul 1928 : Place of birth - MUDGEE NSW : Place of enlistment - SYDNEY : Next of Kin - MOGG ELLISS http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=4530123 Click on the link, then "View digital copy". Select the Enlarge option (top of image). You can save a copy by right-clicking on image and selecting "Save Picture As". Unfortunately the quality of some of the RAN service records is not the best and this one is no exception. It's very hard to read in parts. However I think I can make out the word "Manoora" on the front of the card (the first image). I find that hard to read writing like this can sometimes be enhanced by making a negative of the image in whatever graphics application you are using and playing around with the contrast (a temporary copy, of course). You'll find some ships' histories on the RAN website: http://www.navy.gov.au/spc/history/shiphistorymain.html Regards, Martin Elliget Pinner, Middlesex England AUS-RAN list admin -----Original Message----- From: aus-ran-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-ran-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Geoff Sent: Monday, 25 June 2007 3:31 AM To: AUS-RAN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-RAN] MANOORA SHIPS COMPANY - HAROLD MOGG Sir I am trying to find out if Harold Thomas Mogg, my father in law, served on the Manoora around the end of the war or post war. If he proved to be a member of the Manoora's ships company I am happy to provide you with photos of Harold in uniform. Geoff Hurling

Hello Martin, Thank you for your reply and information - it's welcomed. I have seen/followed all of your suggestions. Cheers, Christine Rockhampton, QLD
Christine. FYI, regarding this man's RN service, only the person involved or, if deceased the next of kin, can request a Royal Navy service record for ratings joining from 1923. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/navy/rnstep1.htm Regards, Martin Elliget AUS-RAN list administrator London (ex Brisbane)
Hi Christine. Welcome. AUS-RAN is rather quiet at the moment, sometimes just one or two messages a year but they are usually well worth the wait ;) First things first, a quick search of the online Whitepages shows one "W. J. Gough" living in North Parramatta: http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/index.jsp If that turns out not to be him, I suggest a search of the electoral rolls, firstly for NSW and, if no joy there, then the other states and territories. Let me know if you're not in Australia and I can advise further about this. In case you don't have it already, Willian John Gough's RAN service record is viewable on the National Archives of Australia website. Open the link below, then click "View digital copy" (you may need to logon to the NAA site as a guest first before the link will work): Title: GOUGH WILLIAM JOHN : Service Number - 44436 : Date of birth - 13 May 1923 : Place of birth - SWANSEA ENGLAND : Place of enlistment - SYDNEY : Next of Kin - GOUGH MOLLIE http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=4423100 The NAA also have another file relating to this man - looks like an application for permission to remain in Australia upon discharge from the navy (digital copy for this one not yet available): Title: [GOUGH, William John (Service No.: D/JX3061218) born in Pontarrawe, Swansea, Glamorganshire, South Wales on 13 May 1923; Mother: Elizabeth GOUGH - Application dated: Melbourne, 5 November 1945] http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=7862815 His service record lists the ships he served on. The RAN Sea Power site has brief ship histories here: http://www.navy.gov.au/spc/history/shiphistorymain.html Let us know how you get on.
