Bernard, Mary, my great-grandmother, and sister Johanna came out from Tipperary to Qld on the "Caroline" in 1853 with their parents Hugh O'Mara and Catherine Cormack. On the passenger list they were listed as "Mara". Bernard's age was given as 12 years which would make his year of birth about 1841. On her marriage to Patrick Skelly in Toowoomba in 1859 Mary is recorded as "Mary O'Mara ". In other places her name is recorded as "O'Meara". > I was wondering if any listers with access to Qld and NSW BDM's could check if they could find some record of Bernard O'Mara as he seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. I have had success in tracking down his sister Johanna who married a Fogarty in Toowoomba and lived well into her 90's. > Any help would be appreciated. > Des Skelly > skel25@optusnet.com.au > > > ==== AUS-IRISH Mailing List ==== > >>"A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour."<< > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

    3. Bernard O'MARA MARA MEARA O'MEARA Qld BDM 1829-1889 Des I have done an extensive search for Bernard and have come up with nothing. (I noticed, though, that Johana's marriage to Michael Fogarty on 01 10 1863 wasn't registered until 1872. Reg: 1872/000668) I though perhaps that he could have used another Christian name, but this didn't find him: for example, I even did, in searching for his death, all parents whose Christian names were Hugh and Catherine. He could, of course, have used a different name if he married, but then there are no births with him as a father. Is it possible he died on the ship and the death wasn't recorded: this has happened in my research, with marine deaths. Another possibility: there is a sad death in 1878 (Ref: 1878/000733) death of a person with the surname O'MARA ..parents are not listed and the Christian name of this O'MARA is given as "O'Mara" ...clearly a poor sole who died and no one knew who he was, not even his Christian name, I'd say. You said your Bernard disappeared off the face of the earth...it is possible that this is he. There clearly wouldn't be too much information if you purchased the certificate. ~Di R.
