South Burnett Times, Tuesday, 26 August, 2003 Obituary Valmai Joyce COOK (1937-2003) Val COOK was born on 17 November 1937 at the Lady Musgrave Hospital, Maryborough, the first of two children born to Ivy Lilly Esmai and Leslie Leonard RIDGEWAY. She was educated at the Maryborough West State School and worked as a pharmacists assistant at the Maryborough Friendly Societies Chemist until her marriage to Mick. Val had just turned 17 when she met Mick at his sisters 21st birthday party on 20 January 1955. Val and Mick got engaged five weeks later and were married in the Presbyterian Church, Maryborough on 22 September 1956. Val had never been any further away from Maryborough than going to Gympie or Bundaberg until she and Mick travelled to Melbourne by car for their honeymoon. Vals first child a son Mervin was born in Maryborough on 7 July 1957. In January 1961, Val, Mick and Mervin moved to Kingaroy and lived in James Street ever since. Two daughters were later born, Karen in 1961 and Leanne in 1963. Val travelled back to Maryborough for their births. During her first winter in Kingaroy, Val would have willingly left, she had never known so many cold days in a row. Within a short time Val had made so many friends in Kingaroy that she could handle the winters. Val many times said that even though city people were nice and polite, she felt a deeper and warmer return of friendship from country people. Val worked on school tuckshops, practised gymnastics and played golf. However it was in her later years, Val found ten pin bowling, which became a passion and joy in her life. Val lived for her family and was always ready to cuddle and comfort them, but rarely chastise. Val treated other children as her own, there was always a lolly or an ice cream available and all she asked for in return was a cuddle. Vals life was given a major boost when the grandchildren began to arrive, and she was thrilled beyond belief when she was told that she was going to be a great-grandmother. Val was so deeply caring for her family and others that she often neglected her own health problems. Birthday and Christmas cards had to have both artwork and verse to both suit the occasion and the person. Often Val would make many visits to various card displays before she would choose a card. Val played ten pin for many years. Every Wednesday, Val would be found at ten pin, only hospitalisation would keep her away. Val always had a series of health problems and they grew worse as she aged. She had a major heart attack at ten pin on the 18 March 1998 and it left her continually exhausted and she slowly grew weaker. She finally gave up ten pin but continually went on Wednesdays and scored. Her ability to entertain and tell jokes never wavered. Val enjoyed going to morning teas and lunch parties. Marriages Aleese McMILLAN and Steve JAMES, being married today at 11.00. We wish all the best for a happy day and wonderful future together. Rebecca and Jessie, and Teneille and Jenny.
