I am trying to track down Robert and Julia Smith who used to live in Geraldton, West Australia. Bob worked there with the Dept of Defence and they left there I'd say about twelve months ago to drive around Australia. I gathered that they were considering settling eventually at Banksia Beach, Bribie Island. Their old email address is not working. I am particularly wanting to contact Julia about the Broadfoot family. If any lister has a clue to their whereabouts I would appreciate a contact. Des Skelly skel25@optusnet.com.au
Dear Listers, I have several Cornish families that were in Queensland, Brisbane and Toowomba, around the mid 1860's. Can anyone suggest what they may have gone to Qld for, were there particular things happening at the time in the way of employment. Or maybe was it just better that where they came from. Your thoughts very much appreciated. Stephanie in Adelaide.
My name is Shirley and I live in Morayfield nr Caboolture.I have joined this list and the Gatton list as I am having lots of fun recreating a few months of the life of a travelling Parson in 1941.It is a most interesting piece of social history which I hope eventually to be able to share with others interested in local Australian hist. I began this project when i found an old diary in a box of rubbish,,just shows how some peoples rubbish is someone else's treasure. There are many names in the diary which may be of interest for list members looking for family connections . I will be glad to look for any that are of interest and pass on all the info available .For my part am hoping that some members may be members of the C/E as that is the most probable church to which the parson belonged going by the termanology used. There are many abbreviations as was common in 1941 words minus vowels ect but place and people names are fairly legible and I have been able to locate his sphere of action more or less on a present day map.Anyone belonging to a local history society would also be of great help too, some event are mentioned and dated specifically and may have pics who knows.I'm not expecting anyone to do in depth historical reasearch ect but just a name here and there ect may help to bring this man to life if he's dead of course!!! if not then I would love to meet him. Thankyou if you can help Shirley
I was wondering if any lister would know where to contact either MARGARET BANKS or EDITH MOLLER who edited the book "Souvenir Kimmins Family Reunion Toowoomba 13 October 1990". I was wondering whether the Kimmins family were aware that the Toowoomba & Darling Downs Family History Society were looking for submissions for their forthcoming "DARLING DOWNS PIONEER INDEX TO 1900". Hi Des, When Marie & I researched for our calendar, Mayors of Toowoomba: From Township to City 1861-1904, we found that George Thorn had been born 3 Sept 1852 at Ipswich. His father was Superintendant of the Penal Station at Limestone Hill in 1838, having worked previously for Sir Ricahrd Bourke, Governor of NSW. I'll have to send you the full entry. Cheers Marionne (Diggles)
Can I just say a HUGE thank you to everyone who responded to my plea for information, the response was fantastic and I will get round to replying to those who need one, but I have 2 sick children in the house now, so it may take a while. Carol in Sussex

I am seeking information on Henrietta MATHES who married Fritz DIEDRICH in Highfields, near Toowoomba, 1877. She was 18 years old and he was 32. She had previously had one daughter, Henrietta MATHES, father unknown. The next time we have anything on Henrietta, she is married to Albert PLATT (did Fritz change his name or did she remarry?) living a Canal Creek. They had about six children. There seems to be no trace whatso ever of a death of Fritz Diedrich. I would be grateful if anyone has any information at all on Fritz Diedrich or Henrietta Platt. Thanking you. Joyce Bryant

Hi Albert, From research we did (Toowoomba & D Downs FHS) for our contribution (an 18 month Calendar of Mayors of Toowoomba 1861-1904) to celebrate the centenary of Toowoomba as a City we found the following: First Town Hall. In Dec 1860, the Darling Downs Gazette reported that the tender of Frederick Stein had been accepted, original plan prepared by Mr. Binstead. The foundation stone was laid on 24 Jan 1862 and the building was completed late June 1862. It was the first Town hall erected in the Colony of Queensland, and stood in James Street on the south-east corner of James & Neil Streets. It was demolished twenty years later to make way for the Second Town Hall. The First Town Hall (a timber building) was deemed inadequate and a competition for designs for a new Town Hall was held. First prize went to Mr. Albert Myers of Orange, NSW. Richard Godsall won the tender. Construction took longer than expected, and the new building was officially handed over on 7 Nov 1881. The School of Arts Building in Ruthven St was gutted by fire in 1898, and it was decided to replace it with a building to house both School of Arts & Town Hall. The James Street building & land were offered for sale and eventually sold to the Education Department. Tenders were called for the erection of a new school using materials from the Second Town Hall. The foundation stone for the Girls and Infants School was laid on 7 Mar 1906. The Third Town Hall was officially opened on its present site on 12 Dec 1900. At noon on 20 Oct 1904 Toowoomba was officially proclaimed a City. Cheers Marionne Diggles

I am researching my Bentley/Emmons family branch. John Arthur Bentley born 1860 in Wakefield Yorkshire migrated to Australia in 1880 and married Mary Jane Emmons in 1884. They lived in New Farm Brisbane, had seven children. John died in Brisbane but I am unable to find anything on Mary Jane. Any hints on how to find Birth, Deaths and Marriages and maybe grave sites in Toowoomba. Anyone know this family? Eryka Canberra
I was asked last evening where the original town hall for Toowoomba was. I am told with authority they tell me, that Toowoomba was a gazetted a municipality in 1860 and a town hall was built somewhere near the South Toowoomba School. My informant tells me that in 1906 Toowoomba was gazetted a city and the present city hall was erected in Ruthven Street. The story goes that the town hall was then sold to the catholic church. Anybody able to confirm or dispute this story. Albert Grulke in sunny winter Melbourne
