I gather that Brisbane City Council either couldn't tell you who arranged Noreen's burial, or that it was someone other than Keith MARTIN. I would therefore suggest that you try: 1. Headstone transcriptions for Hemmant Cemetery. Advice re Qld cemetery records is on <www.judywebster.gil.com.au/beginner.html>. I think you will find that the Hemmant records (possibly different versions) are held by the Qld Family History Society (QFHS) and also by the Genealogical Society of Qld (GSQ). 2. 'Courier Mail' funeral or death notices for Noreen and Keith. 3. Probate files (which, if they exist, should contain death certificates). There is an article about probate files on <www.judywebster.gil.com.au/tips-qld.html>. Bernard O'MARA MARA MEARA O'MEARA Qld BDM 1829-1889 Des I have done an extensive search for Bernard and have come up with nothing. (I noticed, though, that Johana's marriage to Michael Fogarty on 01 10 1863 wasn't registered until 1872. Reg: 1872/000668) I though perhaps that he could have used another Christian name, but this didn't find him: for example, I even did, in searching for his death, all parents whose Christian names were Hugh and Catherine. He could, of course, have used a different name if he married, but then there are no births with him as a father. Is it possible he died on the ship and the death wasn't recorded: this has happened in my research, with marine deaths. Another possibility: there is a sad death in 1878 (Ref: 1878/000733) death of a person with the surname O'MARA ..parents are not listed and the Christian name of this O'MARA is given as "O'Mara" ...clearly a poor sole who died and no one knew who he was, not even his Christian name, I'd say. You said your Bernard disappeared off the face of the earth...it is possible that this is he. There clearly wouldn't be too much information if you purchased the certificate. ~Di R. When her unmarried brother died in Gympie she was the informant for his funeral notice and death certificate and she used the name O'MARA . On various marriage/baptismal documents where my grandmother (daughter of Michael above) was a sponsor she is called O'MEARA or O'MARA but in more formal documents, the name MEARA was used: e.g. on her marriage certificate. I am currently researching the Garrrahy and related King and Scott families. The Kings lived in and around Warwick while the Scott's were Toowoombaites. Noreen Mary Scott born about 1921 married a Keith Martin and the then apparently went to live in Brisbane. Thanks to a helpful person at the Brisbane City Council I have traced a burial of Noreen Martin at the Hemmant Cemetery on May 19, 1971 and at their suggestion contacted the Mt Thompson Crematorium who had a cremation of a Keith John Martin of 48 Maitland Street, Sunnybank on July 6, 1994. I thin he was born in 1919. What I'm trying to establish is whether Keith John Martin is Noreen's husband. Can any lister help or suggest where I go from here? Des Skelly skel25@optusnet.com.au
Hello everyone, I have a local history database for the Berwick, Pakenham, Beaconsfield, Hallam, Narre Warren and Harkaway areas of outer south eastern Melbourne. (I'm happy to do look-ups). I've now decided to do something with the info and am looking at writing up the stories of our WW1 heroes. One of them, Arthur Robert Bragg, gave his birthplace as West Maitland when he enlisted, but had moved from Toowoomba to Beaconsfield in Victoria to take up the license of a hotel. He was married to Emily (maiden name unknown) when he enlisted, and she was living back in Brisbane when she filled out the details for the WW1 Honour Roll. His parents were possibly Edmund Fogwell Bragg & Harriet Elizabeth Grant and he was born around 1876. Does anyone have any connections to, or knowledge of this family? Kind regards, Jenny
