    1. [SEQ] Old age pension records: many German immigrants

    3. Registers of Old Age Pension Applications, Queensland, 1908-1909, include entries for many German immigrants. For about 12 months during 1908-1909, old age pensions were the responsibility of the Qld State Government. Registers of applicants, and a few lesser sources, have survived and are indexed. Original sources usually give name, age, number of years in Qld, place of residence, amount of pension granted (or reason why application rejected), and country or State of birth. A few (mainly for Townsville and Ravenswood) give more details (maybe exact birthdate, street address, occupation, spouse's name). Because the authorities required proof of age and duration of residence in Qld, and all claims were investigated, pension registers may be more reliable than certificates. Reasons for rejection can be illuminating (age under 65yrs; not naturalised; deserted his/her spouse; intemperate; recommended for Dunwich asylum in lieu of pension; etc.) The majority of applicants were born in Great Britain or Germany, but there are many from elsewhere.
