can any one help me ? I have just had a catostrophic failure of my O/S which has entailed a complete refurbishment of my sysyem from the ground up so to speak, but I thought that I would be safe with my family history as I had only about the day before made a back up and put it to C D, must have had a premonition , The only thing wrong is that I (cannot so far) play it back to reinstall it, as windows does not recognise the paf ext, and I cannot see that ext in folder options, and so far havent been able to open it, john spiers
Have you tried downloading PAF again and then importing the saved information into it? Elaine At 06:20 PM 28/09/2002 +1000, you wrote: >can any one help me ? John, It is fairly easy to get the .paf extension recognised but that may not be the problem. If you go into 'Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, FileTypes tab' you can scroll down and look for .paf. I assume from what you say it is not there. It is easy to add it but to do so you need to name a program for the open function which will be PAF. Normally when PAF is installed it will have done all that behind the scenes so it looks like your PAF install hasn't worked properly, if at all. I suggest going to 'Settings, Control Panel, Add/remove programs' and if PAF is in the list then click on it to remove it. Then do a fresh clean install. Yoo may want to download the latest version (5.2) first rather than continuing with an older version. After the install check that folder c:\Program Files\FamilySearch\PAF5 looks okay and move your .paf file into it if that is where you usually store such files. Start up PAF and check the 'Tools, Preferences, Folders tab' to see where it wants .paf files to be or amend accordingly. If you're still not getting anywhere may I suggest you email me more system details - off-list or it may get boring for everyone else!
