    3. Hi Sue from Ipswich, I have relatives who died on the La Rochelle. My connection is the young orphaned Wittmann children who came with Johan George Bauer (age 17) from Dorzbach in Wurttemberg. There was Maria Catherina (age27) who married Johan George (Heinrich) Hoffmann (Age28). Their family Maria Magdalena (Lena)(age 6), Johan Leonhard (age 2) and Margaretha (Mary)(age 1). Johan George (Heinrick) Hoffmann died at sea on 23/09/1865 and was buried at sea. I have his death certificate, which is marked "mar" this means he died at sea. It has the latitude and longitude. and cause of death and time and date of burial. His young son Johan Leonard (not Bernard as shown on the ship passenger list) died after a long illness in the Quarantine Station in Moreton Bay on 18/02/1866 I have his certificate. The rest of the family John (age 19), Maria Margaretha (age16) and Christine Catherina (age16) who married Carl Weinert. This family is the only one I have not bee able to complete. Any helpers? A good introduction to Queensland for some young children. . For a long time I could not find any information on the La Rochelle. I was told the ship details were lost in the Queensland Archives in 1922 due to a flood. I then discovered Eric Kopittke book on "Emigrants from Hamburg to Australia" so I was able to obtain all my details from his book. These records are from German records of people who left on the ship. There were 62 people who died on the La Rochelle. I have a copy of an inquiry on the La Rochelle. A Queensland relative gave it to me and on the top of the pages it says " Hamburg Passenger Lists" and is from page 59 to page 68 of this book. This could be one of Eric Koppitke books. I do not have the findings of the inquiry as the last page states "This being all the evidence forthcoming, the inquiry was adjourned until the release of the immigrants per Wandrahm from quarantine, which is expected to take place in about a week". I have looked up in the Victorian State Library the Courier Mail from 26/12/1865 to 22/2/1866. This is the dates covered in the inquiry, and after that date but I could not find any further details. I have searched in the Queensland Archives and cannot find any details of the La Rochelle inquiry. You have a hard job to find out who died on the ship. All the best John Harkin ------------------------------------------------------ InterNet Australis http://www.australis.com.au/

    3. Hello List, I appreciate the info on the La Rochelle. I have a copy of one page of the original passenger list for La Rochelle 1865 to Moreton Bay. It is hand written so my interpretation of names may not be accurate. . Apart from my own SCHUBERT family, the following families are listed:- Johan ANDRESEN, wife and two children. August GURVELS/GARVELS?? Hans BOOCK Peter WENGEL Peter GALL Christian LAMPRECHT, wife? and one child. Carl DAHM, wife and two children. Hans HEUER, wife and three children. Wilhelm GRABS, wife and one child. Hans FUNK, wife and two children. K......MANSKEY/MANTHEY accompanied by other family but those names listed on the next page, which I of course haven't got. The shipping list shows names, ages, town, country occupation. If anyone would like this information don't hesitate to ask. Christine Ross. ----- Original Message ----- From: John Harkin <harkin@pencc.org> To: <AUS-QLD-SE-Germans-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 11:44 PM Subject: [Qld -SE-German] La Rochelle >>. > > ...........................For a long time I could not find any information on the La Rochelle. 3. I am new to this discussion on the La Rochelle and forgive my ignorance as I know very little about the event. The maritime museum here in Townsville has an extensive library on all shipping. I would be happy to give them a call and see if they have anything which may help. Please forward the relevant questions to me and I will see what I can find. Chris Stewart Townsville

    3. Hi Chis, I have tried every where else, so you never know you might come up with something. The la Rochelle left the Elbe, Germany on the 12th August 1865 captain J. Junge. They Simons Town, South Africa from the 18th October until the 19th November, due to sickness of the passengers. She arrived in Cape Morton on the 25th December 1865, laid anchor in Brisbane River on the 27th December, but due to the sickness still on board the ship was placed in Quarantine. About 65 passengers died on the voyage. We have been trying to prove and find the death of my husbands gggrandmother Margaretha Rück. I have the full report from Hamburg Passenger Lists, we have been through all the newspapers and government gazettes, as well as many other documents, but nowhere have we found as with other ships a list of the deceased. I was sad to learn that about 2 weeks after the La Rochelle, was released from Quarantine that a man committed suicide, (I cannot find the info with his name, I must have miss filed it), but he never recovered from the dreadful journey.
