G'Day List I have just received some research from German church records and have noted that there is a god parent listed in the birth records. I have also noted that the child to be christened was given the first and second Christian names of the godparent. I do not know if this is an evangelist or a catholic church record. The record comes from the Wertheim Baden area. Is this a standard naming convention or is this a local isolated instance? Regards Alan
Hi Alan, it was more or less a standard naming convention. Often the children had 3 to 5 goodparents and the poor child had therefore 5 to 7 given names (incl. those of parents and grandparents). It becomes even more difficult if you have a family with 10 children and 9 of them have the same typical given names in the queue of given names, like August, Friedrich, Johann. Which of the the many given names then became the "calling" name you never knew, it could be the first, but also the last one or even another name. My poor father has the following given names: Horst Christian Albert Paul Rudolf Max my grandfather Paul Ernst Joseph Heinrich August and my sister Kirsten Christine Elisabeth Margarethe Now don't get lost in the jungle of given names and happy hunting!
