Haden to mark 125th anniversary One hundred and twenty-five years ago, the Haden district was first settled. As the early pioneers settled, the need for schools, churches, halls and railway was soon apparent, Haden township was a thriving centre from mid-1911. Haden State School was officially opened on May 20, 1912, and first known as Wahoon State School. To commemorate Haden's earlier name Wahoon, meaning scrub turkey, a steel scrub turkey will be mounted on top of a rock with a plaque containing a brief history of Haden. The committee is also looking for items for a time capsule, which will be buried as part of the project. To complete the setting, named pavers are to be laid around the base. If you were or are currently a resident or business of the Haden area or have a family involvement, you are invited to purchase a paver to record your own or your ancestor's name for future generations. This year we are holding celebrations to mark the 90th anniversary of Haden School and 125 years of Haden district. The celebrations will be at the Haden School grounds on Saturday, August 3, 2002, starting at 10am. A barbecue lunch will be available, and memorabilia displays are planned. A souvenir book has been produced for the occasion and will be available on the day. For more details contact Loretta Voll, Haden, on 4692 8247 or Alan Gersekowski on 4698 8161.
